How I stop My task as well as ended up being a Full-time travel blog writer

How I stop My task as well as ended up being a Full-time travel blog writer

It didn’t occur overnight. Det er sikkert.

It’s not like I woke up one morning as well as just called it quits. Well, actually, it was type of like that. I woke up one dreary morning, as well as as I was forcing myself to get up, I caught something painted on the ceiling — my future. Of program it wasn’t real. Of program I pictured it. however as I lay in my bed looking at the huge white canvass above me, I began to recognize that this was not the life I wished to paint. I just might no longer beat my alarm clock as well as wait on it to sound just since I dreaded to wrap myself in one more business attire as well as do the whole 8-5 routine.

It’s not that I hated my job. Jeg kunne godt lide det. It’s just that I didn’t want it to be the only thing I did. I liked traveling a bit bit more. as well as since I couldn’t do both at the exact same time, I had to choose. That morning I selected to stop my job.

But not so fast. If I was going to do it, I would have to do it right.

I never organized to be a travel blogger. If my college self would see me now, he’d be like, “What the hell are you doing with your life? There’s an effin’ career ladder in front of you, effin’ climb it!”

My whole like affair with airplane tickets as well as seat sales started in 2007. My grandfather passed away, as well as I had to fly to Puerto Princesa to go to his funeral. In the middle of mourning, I might not assist however be blown away by the sheer natural beauty of the place. On my flight back to Manila, I guaranteed myself that I would return, as well as this time around enjoy it. A couple of years later, I was able to do just that.

I began going on weekend getaways more frequently. work difficult on weekdays, travel harder on weekends. I was happy to be trapped in that clockwork. The more locations I set foot on for work, the more I was influenced to work harder, save bigger, as well as ultimately go farther. however as my destinations ended up being brighter, my business task appeared as well as felt bleaker. as well as it led to that morning in 2010 when I just discovered myself staring at the ceiling.

Some people — braver people — would just data their resignation right away. however I wasn’t one of ’em take on people. There was so much at stake, so it needed some cautious planning. It took a long time, however the wait was worth it when I was lastly ready.

Here’s the process that I went with to stop my job, provided with the concerns I asked myself as well as what I did to address them.

Hvad er dækket af denne vejledning?

1. Is traveling truly what you want?
2. If you stop your job, exactly how will you support yourself?
3. Are you willing to sacrifice?
4. Do you have a plan B?
5. No question: just do it!

1. Is traveling truly what you want?

Passion has ended up being a buzz word since I hit mid-twenties. I always hear it in interviews, speeches, as well as even random conversations with friends. Is this your passion? Hvad er du passioneret omkring? Funny enough, they were the very first concerns I asked myself. I needed to be sure if it was truly the life that I would want to lead. Is this what you want to do for the rest of your life?

Resten af mit liv? Not sure about that. however travel was what I enjoyed immensely. It was definitely what I desired then, as well as it is still what I want now. I understood that it was something I might do for a long, long time. It didn’t matter to me if it was something I might dedicate to for a lifetime. What mattered to me was this: I wasn’t happy then, as well as I needed something to change.

My point is — If you’re not happy, do something about it. If you requirement something to change, modification something. Don’t wait on things to occur for you, make them. even if it takes time. even if involves huge changes. Don’t fear change. modification is life. You’ll never “live” life if you keep avoiding it.

2. If you stop your job, exactly how will you support yourself?

Of course, you requirement to work, one method or another. You can’t just buy a airplane ticket as well as beg for money when you’re there. (You might do that actually, however come on.) If your target destinations are those needing visas, then you’re screwed if you’re unemployed. thing is, there are so many chances out there. SÅ MANGE. You just have to look.

What are your skills? Kan du skrive? Can you take great pictures? Can you do graphics? Can you establish websites? Are you up for online assistant-kind of jobs? There are countless tasks online, as well as if you’re patient you can make it a steady source of income.

Why online? since it is location-independent. You can work from anywhere, as well as you can begin even before you stop your job. try to do it in the evening or on the weekends, as well as see if you’re fine keeping that type of set up. After all, that’s exactly how it usually turns out on the road most of the time. You travel during the day as well as work at night, preferably with a bottle of beer in one hand. Haha.

There are other chances on the road. I have satisfied a great deal of travelers who teach English when they travel. Some work at farms in exchange of food as well as lodging. SoloFlightEd worked as a waiter at a resort in Malaysia for a couple of months to get by. What’s that old saying? Aaah, if there’s a will, there’s a way.

Photo: scratch Map Philippines. offered for P1350 at Quirks!

3. Are you willing to sacrifice?

Was I sure that this would turn out all shining, shimmering, splendid for me? Nej for helvede. If anything, I was rather sure I would have to provide up a great deal of things. believe about it. Trading a full-time career with travel is going to leave you with tectonic adjustments. Can you photo yourself surviving a lower-paying or inconsistent job?

You may be asking: if I provide up my job, exactly how am I going to pay for travel? The answer, sacrifice. many people believe traveling is expensive. Well, it is expensive. Forholdsvis. however it is NOT as costly as others state it is.

The biggest monetary boulder is always the airplane tickets. however even that is not that huge of a issue anymore. SEAT SALES ARE REAL. stol på mig. almost all the tickets I utilize I get from seat sales. You just have to understand exactly how to do it. Here’s exactly how —> exactly how to book inexpensive Fares.

Once you make it past the airports, it’s a great deal easier. Hostels over hotels. street food stalls over restaurants. Buses over planes. Backpacking over prearranged tours. You’ll be surprised exactly how affordable it is to travel.

Still, it demands that you provide up a part of your lifestyle. For eksempel:

If you’re the type who needs to have a cup of Starbucks coffee each morning, you’ll see exactly how much more you’re gonna save if you ditch the habit. as well as you will pick up many lessons such as this along the way.

But money isn’t the only problem. connections will be affected. Are you prepared to spend a great deal less time with your liked ones? Are THEY prepared, too? Are you supporting your family? Are you in a dedicated relationship? Make sure they understand.

4. Do you have a plan B?

Let’s say, it doesn’t work out for you. Hvad vil du gøre?

This is why you shouldn’t shed bridges. close them, however not burn. In the off possibility that travel isn’t for you, at least it is simple to reconnect with the life you abandoned, ideally this time around with a different perspective.

In my case, I made sure that before I quit, I was positive that it would be simple for me to discover work even if I go freelance. I did my finest to excel in my full-time job, sufficient to be noticed by prospective clients. I made sure I had a powerful body of work, an impressive portfolio.

I hated working full time then, however I did not dislike my job. I liked marketing. I liked what I was doing. travel is my biggest romance, however advertising is my very first love. I kept in touch with my advertising roots even on the road. as well as they are both extremely rewarding.

5. No question: just do it!

If you believe you’re ready, then what are you waiting for? If you’re in your mid-20s like me, what’s stopping you? You’re young, not many responsibilities, not much to lose. There is no much better time.

Quit it, as well as book a ticket to somewhere awesome!

Again, this is exactly how I did it. I do not mean that you comply with this, however only to offer a peek at the process I had gone through. other travelers did it differently. many of them just jumped into it blindly. That’s great, you know, if you believe it’s for you. It’s just that I just had to plan the whole thing. as well as that’s okay too.

At the end of the day, all travelers want the exact same thing — to fly. I desired my spirit to soar however not by climbing an imaginary career ladder; I want a genuine mountain, a genuine summit, a genuine experience around the world. far beyond the pigeonhole that was my office. With a much wider view than from the top of that fuckin’ imaginary ladder.

Maybe someday I’ll be back. I sometimes miss my business life terribly, to be honest. Måske. En dag.

But for now, I believe I’m staying outside, where I might get up as well as see not a blank ceiling however wild clouds chasing the blues away. It’s always a fantastic sight.

What are the demands for applying for a tourist visa?

We have a devoted publish about that here: Korea Visa Requirements

Hvordan man ansøger? What are the steps?

We have a step-by-step guide here: exactly how to apply for a Korea Visa in Manila

Do I requirement a travel company to apply?

YES, unless you’re applying directly in Cebu. The Korean embassy in Manila needs tourist visa applications filed starting July 1, 2018, to be coursed with any type of of their designated travel agencies. However, the Korean Consulate in Cebu is not impacted by this as well as will continue to accept walk-in applicants as they did.

If you’re applying in Manila before July 1, 2018, you can still work on the application yourself. It’s quick as well as free. However, if for whatever reason this isn’t a practical choice — you online in the province, you just can’t spare a working day for this — by all means, discover a travel agency. just keep in mind that they will fee you a service fee.

Do I requirement to book flights before applying?

No. It’s not one of the requirements. I’ve tried submitting this before, they eliminated it from the pile.

How about hotel reservation? Do I requirement to book hotels before applying?

No. You don’t requirement it. However, make sure you have an concept which hotel you will be staying since it’s one of the needed fields in the application form. You don’t requirement to reserve, however you requirement to understand where you mean to stay.

Should I stay in the hotel I composed on the application form?

No. If your application is approved, you can quite much stay in any type of hotel or hostel you want.

How long does it take to process the application?

At least 25 working DAYS in Manila, according to the embassy.

But according to the travel companies we consulted, it’s safer to apply AT least 30 working DAYS before your trip.

That’s exactly how long the embassy takes to process. however you must likewise enable companies time to collect, document, kind out, provide to as well as pick up the passports from the embassy.

In Cebu, it’s 10 working days.

What are OECD visas?

These are visas granted by countries that are part of the OECD (Organization for economic Co-operation as well as Development). These are the member countries:

Australien
Austria
Belgium
Canada
Chile
Tjekkiet
Danmark
Estonia
Finland
France
Germany
Grækenland
Hungary
Iceland
Ireland
Israel
Italy

Japan
Korea
Latvia
Luxembourg
Mexico
Netherlands
New Zealand
Norway
Poland
Portugal
Slovakia
Slovenia
Spain
Sweden
Schweiz
Kalkun
Det Forenede Kongerige
Forenede Stater

Update (June 12, 2019): Although Japan is an OECD country, JAPAN VISA is no longer honored by the Korean embassy in reaction to a number of situations of applicants submitting fake Japan visa as well as stamps.

I have OECD Visas. Does it mean my application will be approved?

Ikke nødvendigvis. however you have much better chances. as well as that the processing is a great deal faster.

How long can I stay in Korea if I am granted a visa?

Regular visas usually enable 59 days. You can apply for a longer stay.

Can I submit just the bank certificate?

No. starting October 2016, a bank statement showing transactions for the past 3 months is a needed document.

So you have to submit BOTH a bank certificate as well as a bank statement.

How much money should my bank account have to get approved?

I don’t understand the minimum amount. I don’t believe the embassy explicitly states it. however I have tried applying with P100,000 in the bank for a 4-day stay as well as got approved.

I assumption the key thing to keep in mind right here is that exactly how much you have should be proportional to exactly how long your stay is. For example, if you have only P100,000, don’t apply for a 59-day stay since that would obviously raise a great deal of concerns regarding whether or not you can pay for the trip.

To provide you a ballpark figure, the embassy of France needs EUR 120 each day from Schengen Visa applicants. That’s around P7600 per day. add the expense of airfare as well as hotel, as well as that should be the minimum amount in your bank. Again, this is not the official rule. We’re just utilizing the French Embassy’s policy as an example.

I’m a freelancer. I don’t have a Certificate of Employment. What can I submit?

I have tried applying for a visa when I was a freelancer. What I did was, I requested for a letter from my clients that might serve as a accreditation that I was working for them. The letter likewise included what I do for them, when I was hired, exactly how much I get as compensation, as well as other details.

Here’s the style I followed.

Setting up fake worker failed: “Cannot tons script at: https://www.thepoortraveler.net/wp-content/cache/min/1/b9b166415cb8234a882188e0024ca068.worker.js”.

The embassy accepted it, as well as my application was approved.

HOWEVER, the embassy seems to have been much stricter these days, so I’m not sure whether or not they still accept something like this.

I’m a trainee with a part-time job. should I apply as a trainee or an employee?

I consulted a designated travel company for the very best method to go about this, as well as they stated that it’s much better to apply as a trainee as well as submit parents’ docs.

They stated that applying as both employed as well as trainee can confuse the embassy. They likewise stated that part-time tasks are commonly viewed by the embassy negatively since it tells them 2 things: one, that you are not as rooted as well as as economically stable, as well as two, that there is a possibility that you will work there too.

I don’t have an ITR. Hvad skal jeg gøre?

I honestly don’t understand exactly how to response this since I’ve always had an ITR even as a freelancer.

But according to a few of our neighborhood members who have done this before, they included an explanation letter as well as other proof of sources of earnings in their application.

How early should I apply for a Korea visa? Can I apply months before my actual travel date?

If you have a target travel date, apply not earlier than 3 months before that.

When a routine visa is issued, it enables the holder to go into Korea at any type of time within the next 3 months (90 days) of the problem date. So if your visa is issued on July 1, you can go into anytime before October 1.

But if you’re applying in Manila, make sure you apply at least 30 working days before your meant travel date.

Do I requirement to show as much as submit the documents?

NO, usually. You can ask somebody else to do it for you IF THE demands ARE COMPLETE.

However, every company can implement their own rules. So it’s finest to phone call the travel company where you plan to lodge your application to be sure.

I requirement to explain something. will they accept a cover letter?

Ja. I did once. They accepted it.

How much is the visa fee?

FREE if your application is for 59 days or shorter.

P1800 for 60- to 90-day stay.

However, travel companies will be charging a service charge for processing your application. charge differs from company to agency, however it’s usually between P700 as well as P1000.

What are the typical reasons why Korean visa applications are denied?

I can only speculate, however based on the messages we get from our followers, the usual reasons are the following:

You can’t prove that you can economically support yourself on this trip. You most likely have insufficient funds or your sponsor is not in a great monetary standing.

You can’t prove that you mean to return (rootedness). You most likely don’t have a steady task at this point, recently employed, or recently resigned, as well as it’s providing the perception that you mean to work there.

Your intention/purpose in Korea is unclear. This is why it is finest to be specific when you’re outlining the reasons for your visit.

If my application is denied, can I apply again?

Yes, however only after 6 months.

25 things TO SEE and do in BUDAPEST

25 things TO SEE and do in BUDAPEST

Last Updated: 10/30/21 | October 30th, 2021

When I first went to Budapest, the gritty, rundown streets charmed me. Budapest felt edgy. This was a city of underground bars in abandoned buildings, hearty food, and major people.

Originally founded by the Celts around 1 CE, the region was later annexed by the Romans, who founded the city of Aquincum here (which present-day Budapest now covers). The Magyars eventually invaded the region after being pushed out of Bulgaria, founding the Kingdom of Hungary around the year 1,000. In 1361, the king built Buda castle here, solidifying present-day Budapest as the capital and cultural hub of the kingdom.

In 1873, the towns of Buda and Pest were merged with the third area of the city, Óbuda (Old Buda), to form modern-day Budapest.

Over the years, I’ve seen the city change as tourists discovered this hidden gem and made it not so hidden anymore. And, while no longer as edgy as it once was, Budapest is still one of the best cities in Europe. It provides some of the best nightlife on the continent, tons of beautiful districts, tons of spas and hot springs, spectacular historic buildings and museums, and lots of green space.

To help you make the most out of your next trip, here are my top 25 things to see and do in Budapest.

1. Take a totally free walking Tour

Whenever I arrive in a new destination, I always take a totally free walking tour. It’s a budget-friendly way to see the main sights, learn about the destination, meet new people and ask any questions you have to a local expert. They’re a quick and easy way to get an summary of a city, which helps you plan the rest of your trip. Budapest has a number of good totally free trips available. trip to Budapest and Generation trips both offer outstanding tours. just be sure to suggestion your guide!

2. soak at the Baths

Budapest is known for its thermal medspa baths (it’s one of the best things about this city). There are much more than 100 mineral hot springs here, numerous dating back to the Roman Empire.

The many popular is the Széchenyi Baths in City Park. With 18 pools, it’s the largest and many well-known in Europe. The historic buildings that house the medspa were built in 1913, and it’s a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. Don’t forget your bathing suit and flip-flops (you can rent towels and lockers).

Állatkerti krt. 9-11, +36-20 435 0051, szechenyifurdo.hu. open daily from 6am-10pm. Admission starts at 5,300 HUF on weekdays and 6,200 HUF on weekends and holidays.

3. party at the destroy Bars

The nightlife in Budapest is one of the best in Europe — and destroy bars are a big reason why. located in the old Jewish Quarter (the district VII neighborhood), much of the neighborhood was left to decay after world war II. during the 90s, bars began to appear in the abandoned buildings in the area. Now, this underground scene is well on the map, but that doesn’t make these eclectic, arty, and funky spaces any less fun. Szimpla Kert and instant are my favorites.

For a much more comprehensive list, check out my post on the best destroy bars in Budapest!

4. See Castle Hill

This historic area is home to baroque houses and Habsburg monuments. cobblestone streets and narrow alleys that hark back to the city’s medieval roots parallel panoramic views of Pest and the Danube. This section of the city is actually a UNESCO world Heritage Site, with the Old town in the north and the massive palace to the south, which dates to the 13th century. You can get up the hill by bus or take the funicular but you often have to wait. The hill isn’t really that steep so I choose to walk.

5. trip Buda Castle

Also in the Castle hill area is Buda Castle (it’s much more of a palace complex than anything else). The original complex was constructed in the 13th century, however, the huge Baroque palace that exists today was actually built between 1749-1769. originally intended for the nobility, the palace was looted by the Nazis (and then the Soviets) during world war II.

Fun fact: below the castle, Vlad the Impaler (colloquially known as count Dracula) was imprisoned for 14 years. In the dungeon area, there is also a labyrinth which is very cool. There are some museums here as well (see below).

Szent György tér 2, +36 1 458 3000, budacastlebudapest.com. The courtyards are open 24/7 while the castle has hours that align with the museum and gallery (see below).

6. explore the medical facility in the Rock

Over the years, this museum has served as a hospital, bomb shelter, prison, and nuclear bunker. here you can learn about the impacts that world war II, the 1956 revolution, and the cold war had on the city and its people. opened in 2008, it’s one of the most popular attractions in town. Admission includes a one-hour guided trip of the museums, which has all sorts of wax figures, tools, equipment, and furnishings.

Lovas ut 4/c , +36 70 701 0101, sziklakorhaz.eu/en. open daily 10am-7pm. Admission is 5,080 HUF.

7. visit the Hungarian national Gallery

Opened in 1957, this museum focuses on Hungarian artists and history (of which I knew very little before my first visit). The gallery is located in Buda Castle, home to paintings and sculptures from the renaissance and middle ages, including wooden altarpieces from the 1400s. You can also trip the building’s massive dome. The gallery hosts rotating short-term exhibits too so check the site to find out what’s on during your visit.

1014 Budapest, +36 20 439 7325, mng.hu. open Tuesday-Sunday 10am-6pm (last tickets sold at 5pm). short-term exhibitions are only open Tuesday-Thursday. Admission is 1,800 HUF and audio guides are available for 800 HUF. There is an additional charge for taking pictures.

8. wander the Budapest history Museum

This museum covers four floors of Buda Castle and has the most outstanding views across Budapest. It offers a extensive summary of the city’s entire history. It’s a should for anybody wanting to get a much more comprehensive look at the city’s 2,000-year past. My favorite exhibit was the “1,000 Years of Budapest” display. Be sure to get the audio guide as it offers a lot of good supplemental information. It’s worth the cost.

2 Szent Gyorgy Square, +36 1 487 8800 , budacastlebudapest.com/budapest-history-museum. open Tuesday-Sunday 10am-6pm (4pm in the winter). Admission is 2,400 HUF (free if you have the Budapest Card and on national holidays).

9. See the Cave Church

In the 1920s, Catholic monks built this church in a large cave system that had been previously used by a hermit monk. known as Saint Ivan’s Cave, the cave was used as a medical facility during world war II. When the communists concerned power after the war, they covered the entrance in concrete and performed the head monk. In 1989, as the Iron curtain fell, the church was reopened and is now a popular place for tourists as well as a place of worship for locals. get the audio guide to make the most out of your visit. There is a lot of history here.

Sziklatemlom út Gellért Hill, sziklatemplom.hu/web/fooldal.html. open Monday-Saturday 9:30am-7:30pm. Admission is 600 HUF.

10. visit Matthias Church

This neo-Gothic Roman Catholic church is one of the most distinct churches in Europe. I’ve literally seen hundreds of churches and cathedrals across the continent and this is one of the most distinctive. The original church in this spot was built in the 11th century, though nothing remains of it (the current building was constructed in the 14th century and was heavily renovated in the 19th century).

During the Turkish invasion of the 16th century, it was converted to a mosque, which is why it has dynamic colors and designs that aren’t as common in European churches (the church has a colorful roofing system that practically makes it look like it was built from Lego). once inside, you’ll see huge vaulted ceilings and ornate décor.

Szentháromság tér 2, +36 1 355 5657, matyas-templom.hu. open 9am-5pm on weekdays, 9am-1pm on Saturdays, and 1pm-5pm on Sundays. Admission to the church is 2,000 HUF (2,200 HUF for the tower) .

11. visit Fisherman’s Bastion

Built between 1895-1902, this terrace is comprised of seven towers that look out over the river. Each one is implied to represent one of the seven Hungarian tribes that founded the city. The terrace was developed by the same architect who created the Matthias Church and offers spectacular panoramic views across the Danube River. competing legends say that the name comes from either the fact that the terrace overlooks the old fishermen’s guild or that the fishermen’s guild was responsible for protecting that area of the wall. no one is quite certain which is right.

Szentháromság tér, +36 1 458 3030, fishermansbastion.com. open daily 9am-11pm. Admission is free, with an additional charge of 1,000 HUF to visit the upper turrets.

12. admire the Hungarian presidential Palace

The Hungarian presidential palace has been the workplace of the president because 2003. known as Sándor-palota (Alexander Palace), it’s not nearly as outstanding as the surrounding buildings, but if you time your visit best you can see the changing of the guard ceremony at the top of each hour from 9am-5pm (excluding Sundays). in some cases the palace is open for trips (but this rarely happens so don’t get your hopes up).

Szent György tér 1-2, +36 1 224 5000. Admission to the changing of the guard is free.

13. See Buda Tower

This reconstructed “tower” is all that remains of the Church of Mary Magdalene, which was originally built in the 13th century but was destroyed during world war II. When the Turks occupied the city between 1541-1699, the church was converted into a mosque. It reopened in 2017 and you can now climb the 172 steps that result in the top. That said, the views from Castle hill are just as good — and totally free — so I’d skip climbing the steps and just admire this historic tower from the outside.

Kapisztrán tér 6, budatower.hu/en. open daily 10am-6pm (but only on the weekends in January and February). Admission is 1,500 HUF.

14. walk across the Chain Bridge

The Széchenyi Chain Bridge connects Buda with Pest and is a wrought-iron and stone suspension bridge. The bridge originally opened in 1849 but was damaged during world war II and had to be rebuilt. spend some time strolling across the bridge and taking in the view. Don’t miss Gresham Palace, located on the Pest side. It’s an Art Nouveau building that is now a luxurious four seasons hotel.

15. visit Parliament

Built on the Danube in 1902, this is the largest building in the country and home to the national assembly. This massive structure — which covers over 18,000 square meters — took practically 20 years to build after the three cities that make up modern Budapest (Buda, Pest, and Óbuda) united in 1873. The literal translation implies “House of the Nation” or “House of the Country.” You can take guided trips of the building where you can learn about the history of the city and how the government of the country works. (If you plan to visit, purchase your tickets in advancement as the lines can get really long.)

Kossuth Lajos tér 1-3, +36 1 441 4415, parlament.hu. open daily 8am-4pm. Admission is 6,700 HUF for non-EU adults, 3,500 HUF for EU adults.

16. stroll Along the Danube

After going to Parliament, take a walk along the river. Head south to check out the promenade and its numerous green spaces and sculptures, including the sobering “Shoes on the Danube Bank,” a memorial honoring the Jews who were shot here during world war II. If you have a book or just want to take in the view, this is a reflective place to stop and relax.

17. eat at the great Market Hall

This is the oldest and largest indoor market in the country. built in 1897, there are mostly produce, meats, baked goods, and candy on the ground floor while the upper floor is home to restaurants and souvenir shops. It has a lot of conventional places to eat, so be sure to walk around and explore first. Yes, it’s touristy (it’s the central market, after all), but I still found the food quite good (and affordable). even if you don’t plan on purchasing anything, it’s still worth a quick visit to walk around.

Vámház körút 1–3, budapestmarkethall.com/great-market-hall-budapest. open Monday 6am-5pm, Tuesday-Friday 6am-6pm, and Saturday 6am-3pm. closed on Sundays. Admission is free.

18. admire St. Stephen’s Basilica

This is the largest church in Hungary. named after Hungary’s first king, the church is comprised of ornate architecture, beautiful artwork, and is crowned by a massive dome. It was completed in 1905 after taking 50 years to build. Be sure to check out all the little chapels as well as the reliquary that is (allegedly) home to St. Stephen’s mummified best hand. If you’re there on a Monday, they have organ recitals.

Szent István tér 1, +36 1 311 0839, bazilika.biz. open daily from 9am-7pm (opens at 7:45am on Sundays). entry to the basilica is by donation, though it’s 2,000 HUF per person for the tower/observation deck.

19. See Dohány street Synagogue

Also known as the great Synagogue, this is the second-largest synagogue in the world (it seats 3,000 people). built in 1854, the synagogue provides guided trips that shed lig

I New York, Times Square. I Sydney, operahuset. I Peru, Machu Picchu. I Bangkok, Grand Palace.

HOW TO enjoy SONGKRAN (THAI new YEAR)

HOW TO enjoy SONGKRAN (THAI new YEAR)

Last Updated: 02/04/20 | February 4th, 2020

Songkran is a three-day water fight that celebrates the Thai new Year. It occurs between April 13th to 15th (which coincidentally is the hottest month of the year). Songkran is one of the popular festivals not only in Thailand, but in the world, marking the beginning of a new solar year and is a time of renewal and rebirth.

The history of Songkran

The word Songkran is from the Sanskrit language and means the passage of the sun from one sign of the Zodiac to another. The date was originally set by astrological calculations, but it is now fixed on 13 April. The country closes down for the holiday, focusing entirely on the festival and the accompanying holiday rituals.

Over the years, Songkran has become a enormous tourist draw. Travelers and backpackers alike flock to the country to take part, with tens of thousands of people taking to the streets to ring in the new year by dumping buckets of cold water on each other.

Bangkok sees the largest of Songkran parties. The busiest streets are Silom road, Khao San road, and RCA. The holiday is meant to wash away the old year and bring in the new year. It’s amazing to see little kids, seniors, and even police get involved.

In fact, my favorite moment involves the police: a cop and I got into a water fight and I sprayed his partner who was not wet. He looked at me like I was about to get arrested. I was the stupid foreigner who took it too far. He walked over to me, took my squirt gun, stepped back and his parter and him teamed up on me. we all had a good laugh!

It’s a very high spirited holiday and everyone is just out to have a terrific time.

The only way to really understand the craziness that is Songkran is to see it like in person so here’s my video of the event to give you an idea:

Tips for attending Songkran

To help you make the most out of this epic waterfight, here are some tips:

Chiang Mai and Bangkok have the biggest celebrations but you’ll find little celebrations all over the country.

In Bangkok, Khao San road and Silom hold the two biggest celebrations.

Plan to be wet — all the time. even if you have a backpack or bag, people will still spray you with water. There’s no escape unless you are inside.

The only way to avoid being wet is to have a camera or cigarette. If people see you with one, they won’t spray you with water.

Just have fun. There’s no malice involved here so if you get wet and you didn’t want to, just go with it. It’s the holiday and you just have to accept it. They even pour water on people driving motorcycles.

One of the most fun things to do is get in a tuk-tuk or truck and ride around the city spraying people with water. You get into some of the most amazing water fights and meet a lot of people. I highly recommend this during at least one day.

Wear goggles. people are going to be shoot or throwing water at you all day long. You never know when the next attack will come, so get some goggles to protect your eyes. It will save you from squinting all day long!

Don’t pay for water. 99% of locals will offer buckets of water for you to refill your water gun with for free, but there are a few people out there who will try to charge you for a refill. just ignore them until you find someone sharing their water for free. You won’t have to go far.

Road deaths double during Songkran, with up to 50 people dying in automobile accidents each day (the majority of which are motorcycle accidents). stay safe and keep off the bike — whether it’s yours or someone else’s!

Attending Songkran: Logistics

With so many people taking part in this festival, accommodation sells out quickly. If you’re planning to attend Songkran, make sure you book your hostel early.

Also, keep in mind that Songkran is a public holiday. That means banks and government services will be closed. If you need consular or financial services, get them out of the way before the holiday. as of 2018, the government extended the holiday period to 5 days (to allow people time to go home and check out family) so many services are closed even longer now. Prepare accordingly.

If you want to enjoy the holiday in Bangkok, public transportation is both convenient and cheap. Non-airconditioned buses cost 10 THB while buses with AC cost 15 THB. These can take you anywhere in the city. The SkyTrain and Metro cost 15-50 THB per trip and you can purchase a day pass for 120 THB.

Taxis are a more expensive option and cost around 70-100 THB (one from the airport to Khao San road will set you back 300-500 THB). just make sure they use the meter. If they don’t just get out and find another taxi. Alternatively, there’s a Suvarnabhumi airport Rail link express that’s a 15-minute non-stop journey between the city and the airport that costs 150 THB per trip.

***
Songkran takes place all over the country and, if you are in Thailand during this time, you will experience it. You can’t miss it. It’s like the one thing that brings everyone together here. Prepare to get wet. Prepare to have to fun! It’s one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had (and I’ve done it three times). The event is just pure joy. everyone is here to have fun. There’s no malice involved.
Enjoy Songkran!

I let out a deep, deep sigh of relief as soon as the plane landed at Subarnabhumi Airport. It wasn’t since there had been trouble on the flight or anything like it. I was just stoked that I lastly reached Bangkok, after a long tug-o-war with my poultry change ego.

I quit my full-time task to backpack across Southeast Asia. however the trip  became a reality eight months after my last day at work. eight months, people. eight months. quite a long time. What happened in between? Chickening out as well as delaying tactics masked as preparation. It would be my very first time to travel alone, as well as to do it in a foreign country intimidated me a lot. even on my last night in Manila, there was a part of me that wanted to back out.

But it happened. Late, yes, however it did.

And there’s no much better place to have my baptism of fire than in Asia’s City of Smiles — Bangkok.

Wat Arun
Bangkok: Asia’s Backpacking Capital

The tired backpacking route across the Southeast Oriental peninsula is known in the travel world as the Banana Pancake Trail, so called for the many stalls selling banana pancakes that are widely sold in the cities along the trail. This route is popular for a lots things, however its “exotic” cultures as well as low expense of living top the list. complying with it means passing through Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, as well as Cambodia. as well as this trail starts as well as ends in Bangkok, the epicenter of backpacking in the region.

The funding of Thailand, Bangkok is the commercial, economic, as well as political center of the country. It is a wild, extremely developed third-world metropolis however is still very much in touch with its past. Bangkok’s history as the Thai funding began in 1782, when King Rama I had the people move south complying with the autumn of Ayutthaya in 1767. Bangkok lies at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River, seen as a very strategic military place back then. It was likewise King Rama I who ordered the building of the Grand palace complex as well as many other temples, which remain standing until today.

Their language can be quite daunting to non-native speakers, particularly its lengthy words as well as tongue-twisting pronunciations, however as with every other language, it only intimidates in the beginning. English isn’t widely spoken, however what the locals lack in English fluency, they make up for with their friendly mindset toward tourists.

Getting around Bangkok

Although it is not as sweat-free as in Hong Kong or Singapore, commuting in Bangkok is quite easy. Vehicular traffic can get crazy during rush hour, however it is nothing compared to what we are forced to endure in Manila. If you’re used to the giant vehicle parking great deal that runs across Manila called EDSA, you’ll be fine in Bangkok (or any type of other Southeast Oriental city for that matter).

Getting around via public transportation means using one or more of these four modes:

Train (BTS Skytrain/MRT). Bangkok’s train system is quick as well as reliable, as well as will take you to many attractions throughout the city. I discovered myself taking the train most of the time during my stay since there was a train station very near my hotel. Also, even during the busiest hours, I never experienced getting almost squished to death. The BTS fare ranges from 15 to 52 baht. as well as you will need 5 or 10 baht coins to get in. most stations have a counter than can break your big bills as well as a ticket machine that accepts bills.

Båd. The two boat services operating in Bangkok are the Chao Phraya reveal Boat, which plies up as well as down the Chao Phraya River as well as is popular among tourists for it stops at many of the city’s most popular landmarks; as well as the Saen Saep reveal Boat, used mostly by locals who commute to work. The Chao Phraya boat is the best option for you if you mean to check out the Grand palace complex (at Tha Chang) as well as Wat Pho (at Tha Tien), as well as the Siriraj medical museum (Wang Lang Station) within one dag!

Onboard a Chao Phraya ferry
Taxa. always my last option. If my destination is too far from a train or boat station, I would just hail a cab. A ride costs more than in Manila however nowhere near the rates in Hong Kong or Singapore. The flagdown is 35 baht as well as the typical ride within the city is probably around 100.

You might encounter cab drivers who take advantage of tourists by not using the meter as well as then overcharging. If the driver refuses to use the meter, just get off the vehicle. understand that all cabs in Bangkok must use the meter. many of these drivers wait for tourist passengers at the popular attractions like temples as well as Khao San Road. I always walked far from them as well as just hail a moving cab.

Tuktuk. I didn’t even bother. They are very expensive, even more costly than cabs, as well as I had tried it in Siem Reap anyway. If you really want to try for the heck of it, just agree on the price first.

Where to Stay

Check rates as well as Availability Here
For budget plan travelers, Khao San road as well as Silom road offer the cheapest accommodations. Khao San is the backpacking center as well as has a very festive vibe with great deals of street food, restaurants, as well as bars. Its popularity among travelers likewise triggered the mushrooming of scams here. There is no train station around.

Silom is the business as well as monetary district of Bangkok. There are malls, shops, as well as night markets in its inner alleys. The famous (or infamous, depending on exactly how you look at it as well as what you mean to do, haha) Pat Pong is likewise located around the corner. the best part is that it has its own train station that links it to rest of the city.

I was able to try two budget plan hotels in Bangkok. The pics below lead you to short reviews of these hotels.

Where to Eat

In the streets, of course! Bangkok is widely known for its inexpensive as well as tasty kerbside cuisine. A stay in the city is never total without sitting at a sidewalk table as well as digging in to a plateful of Pad Thai or Pork Rice. It’s a dining experience that you shouldn’t miss. An order usually costs THB 40-60. right here are some dishes you cannot leave the city without trying!

Pork Rice

Grilled poultry as well as Innards

Temples as well as shrines top the listing of the popular tourist attractions in the city center. My preferred moment in Bangkok was inside the Siriraj Forensic Museum, where I walked through chilling galleries of gore as well as violence. It was a little out of the way, however if you’re into CSI or final Destination, this is your wonderland right here.

Vigtige tip

13 best things TO do in SAGA, JAPAN

13 best things TO do in SAGA, JAPAN

It was Gerald Anderson and Julia Barretto who introduced Saga to me. In the film between Maybes, this humble, little-known prefecture became the setting of an unlikely romance. While Saga’s rustic charm sure feels cinematic, there is definitely more to this unassuming destination than what can be captured on cam.

Saga is one of the seven prefectures that make up Kyushu Island. located in the northwestern side of the island and situated next to Fukuoka, it is easily accessible. However, most tourists coming from Fukuoka, considered the primary gateway to Kyushu, breeze past this often overlooked destination in favor of Nagasaki. but there are many reasons to stop and take your time in Saga. here are some of them.

Mifuneyama Rakuen

This was our most unforgettable stop in Saga. We visited in late November, so the entire site was clad in the fiery colors of fall.

Mifuneyama Rakuen is a picturesque garden in the shadows of Mt. Mifuneyama, a postcard-worthy mountain that looks like the hull of a ship. completed in 1845, this was originally built as the holiday home of Shigeyoshi Nabeshima, a feudal lord. Spanning 50 hectares, this sprawling park takes pride in its walking trails that will take you around the site including a still pond that mirrors its breathtaking surroundings perfectly.

The best time to visit is spring, when the cherry blossom trees — all 5000 of them — reach the peak of their bloom. aside from the sakura season, autumn is also a great time as the trees paint the site red and orange.

Entrance fee: ¥600
Hours open: 8am-5pm (may change on certain dates)
Nearest station: Takeo-Onsen Station.

Yutoku Inari Shrine

Welcoming over three million visitors annually, Yutoku Inari Shrine is undoubtedly one of the three most popular Inari shrines; the other two are Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari Shrine and Aichi’s Toyokawa Inari Shrine. most visitors flock to the Shinto shrine to ask for good family fortune, good business, traffic safety, and a huge catch. The whole complex is stunning. It has a gate, a bridge, a garden, small ponds, the main building, a museum, the numerous dark orange (or red) torii gates, and other beautiful buildings.

Admission Fee: FREE; For the Yutoku Museum: ¥300 (Adult) / ¥200 (Students) / ¥100 (7-15 y/o); For the Garden: ¥200
Opening Hours: 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Location: 1855, Furueda, Kashima City, Saga Prefecture
Nearest Station: JR Hizen-Kashima Station. travel time from JR Hakata station to JR Hizen-Kashima station is about an hour via limited express Train Kamome for around ¥3200. From the station, take the bus to Yutoku Inari Shrine. The bus fare is ¥320.

Saga Prefectural government Office

What will you be doing at a government office, you ask? The Saga Prefectural government office offers a 360-degree, unobstructed view from its observation floor (called Saga 360). To manage your expectations, it isn’t that tall. It stands only 50 meters, but it is the tallest building in the city. If the weather cooperates, you can even see Mt. Unzen, an active volcano in Nagasaki Prefecture.

If you can, visit at around sunset when the city is bathed in golden light. After admiring the vista, have a taste of Saga’s rich, delectable cuisine at Shino, a restaurant on the same floor. You can dig into some tender, juicy Saga beef and delicious sashimi.

If you visit at night, you can also enjoy a projection mapping show! more about that in the next section.

Observation Hall operating Hours: Weekdays, 8:30am-10pm; Saturdays, 10am-10pm; Sundays, 10am-9pm

Nearest train station: JR Saga Station. From here, you can take the bus from nearby Bus center to Kencho-mae bus stop. It’s a short walk from there. You can also walk straight from Saga Station, but it’s gonna take at least 20 minutes.

Zombie Land Saga

Over the past few years, one of the anime shows that made the biggest waves in Japan is Zombie Land Saga, which tells the story of Sakura Minamoto, a high school student who met an untimely death on the way to an audition. Years later, she was resurrected together with other zombies to form a 7-piece singing group called Franchouchou and promote Saga Prefecture.

That’s a very odd story concept — outrageous, even — but I have to admit that it’s very interesting. Obviously, this is fiction (duh), but the great thing about it is, Saga Prefecture embraced it!

In fact, at the observation deck of the Saga Prefectural government office building, you can enjoy a projection mapping show featuring Zombie Land Saga. It culminates in an exclusive animated concert. but that’sikke alle.

Andre steder omfatter Karatsu Castle og Drive-in Tori.

SAGA BALLOON FIESTA.

Adresse: 2-27 2Chome, Matsubara, Saga City

Sagajoka Hinamatsuri (Doll Festival)

Adresse: 1874-9 Tara Oaza, Tara, Tara-cho, Fujitsu-gun, Saga Prefecture

Nærmeste station: Tara Station

Saga Beef.

Nogle tjener endda samplere, ligesomKiHaKo of YOSHIDAYA Cafe, which will allow you to taste three types of local green tea.

Ureshino Onsen

Tea isn’t the only thing that keeps the town of Ureshino hot and steaming. It’s also famous for hot springs!

Ureshino Onsen is a hot springs town in southern Saga. like most onsen towns, it is great place to just take a dip, relax, and recharge. but Ureshino’s alkaline water is also believed to have great benefits to the skin. around 60 ryokan and other establishments dot the map of the town.

When using an onsen, always remember the following:

No bathing suit or underwear allowed. strip down to your birthday suit. The thought of going completely naked can be unsettling, but trust me, no one gives an eff.

Wash and shower before you take a dip. sit on the provided stool while you wash. You’ll find liquid soap and shampoo near every shower space.

No swimming, jumping, diving, or any other disturbing activity!

Don’t let your hair or towel touch the water.

No loud noises. Vær stille.

Dry yourself with a towel before heading back to the locker room.

In most public onsen, people with tattoo are not allowed, at least not those with the big ones.

You’ll also find foot bath facilities around town!

Tosu premium Outlets

Modeled after a southern California town, the site feels a bit out of place in Saga, but it is one of the most popular shopping stops in this part of Kyushu. This vast shopping destination houses 160 outlet stores featuring both Japan’s homegrown brands and international labels including Coach, Gap, Citizen, Kate Spade, Vans, Under Armour, Ralph Lauren, Seiko, and Takeo Kikuchi.

If you’re not that much of a shopaholic (like us), there’s a food court where you can stuff your face with ramen, takoyaki, and more!

Hours open: March-January 10am-8pm; February, 10am-7pm
Address: 8-1, Yayoigaoka, Tosu-shi, Saga, Japan
Nearest train station: Yayoigaoka Station. From here, you can take the bus to Tosu premium Outlets.

How to get to Saga

Saga has its own airport, Saga airport (HSG), but it serves a very limited number of flights, mostly to and from Tokyo, Taipei, Shanghai, and Incheon. If you’re coming from other cities overseas, you are most likely going to land in Fukuoka international airport (FUK).

From here, you need to get to Hakata Station. Here’s how.

Once you’re at Hakata Station, catch a train to Saga. If your destination is Saga City, the cheapest way is by boarding the limited express Kamome train.
Travel time: 40-50 minutes.
Fare: ¥1,130 (one way)
Seat Fee: ¥840 (unreserved)
Total cost: ¥1,970 (one-way)

To see the schedule, you can check Hyperdia.

If you’re traveling from Fukuoka to Saga or you plan to explore many parts of Saga Prefecture and other prefectures, consider getting a JR Kyushu Rail Pass to save a lot on fares! On our most recent trip, JR Kyushu shouldered our journeys by giving us a free JR Kyushu Rail Pass so we could use it first-hand and see for ourselves how far it could take us.

The JR Kyushu Rail Pass comes in three versions: Northern, Southern, and ALL Kyushu. but let’s focus on the two passes only: northern and ALL Kyushu.
