BREAKING THE marriage mold

BREAKING THE marriage mold

Posted: 05/05/11 | may 5th, 2011

This is a guest post by Ayngelina of Bacon is Magic. She will be writing a series of articles on traveling as a solo female in your thirties.

I had a textbook childhood. I went to university, graduated with a degree, worked hard, and eventually landed a great job as an account director at an ad agency. It paid well, and I wore jeans to work, practiced yoga at lunch, and went for pints with coworkers after hours.

But I wasn’t happy. The problem was I wasn’t unhappy either.

I was plugging away, doing my job, with no real highs or any real lows either. I worked, had dinner with friends, and went out on the weekends. I had enough money to go on vacations and do as I liked.

This was what life was supposed to be about, right? work hard to score a great job and money to afford the trendiest clothes and best restaurants? I chased after that in my twenties, but once I hit my thirties, I realized that none of it made me happy.

I had always wanted to travel more than just for a short holiday. On vacations to Europe and Southeast Asia, I met people who gave up their careers to travel long-term. I was envious. I wished I could do that.

After ten years of working, that dream was neatly tucked away in the cabinet of things I wanted to do but was too afraid to. I had lots of excuses: I didn’t make enough money, I didn’t have enough in retirement, I wasn’t where I wanted to be in my career. None of those were true, but they helped me legitimize not traveling. but I promised myself I would someday.

But we all know someday never happens. We tell ourselves we’ll go after the dream in our head…but only if all the stars align, there’s a full moon, and we get a perfect Yahtzee score. jeg

n reality, “someday” rarely comes, and we resign ourselves to simply dreaming about it.

What finally pushed me over the edge was turning 32 and sensing my biological clock ticking. I didn’t know if I really wanted to have kids, but I knew if I did, I had to travel now. I believed once you had kids, your life changed too much to travel.

My friends with children never contemplated going to Colombia or Mongolia; they just wanted a decent night’s sleep and a sale on diapers. If I was going to have children, I wanted one last taste of glorious independence.

When I fantasized about this one last great adventure, I thought it would be with someone else. I tried to beg, cajole, and bully my then-boyfriend into coming, but it wasn’t his dream and I was too scared to go alone.

I had traveled alone once before, on a week’s vacation, eating my way alone around Rome. but that was easy. A week in Italy is much different than selling everything, quitting your job, and taking a one-way flight to Mexico.

This time, I would be giving up my comfortable life, and that was a scary thought.

But one lazy Sunday afternoon as I was watching a movie with the boyfriend asleep on the couch, I looked around and thought:

Is this all there is? Is this my life? Is my dream to travel over?

I was on this track for the boyfriend/apartment to turn into husband/house/kids, and I suddenly realized wasn’t ready for that. There was no convincing him, though — I would have to go alone.

“Someday” had turned into now.

I got up from the couch, went to my laptop, and started figuring out my finances. That was the beginning of the end of my old life.

I was so afraid to go, but more afraid to face the regret of not going. I made a promise to myself, and I was too stubborn to break it.

Somehow, thinking that children were the end to independent travel gave me the push to finally go travel. I slowly started selling off all the pieces of my life, from furniture to clothing to my beloved book collection.

I put on a brave face when I told friends and family I was going, but inside I was terrified.

What would I do alone for a year?

Would I be lonely the entire time? W

ould I be scared to travel in countries where I didn’t know the language?

After going away parties, goodbye lunches, and farewell dinners, my boyfriend drove me to the airport. We broke up outside airport security. As I gave him one last hug, I clung to him tightly. He represented all the safety and security in my life. I had a hard time breaking the embrace. I was so scared of the next step.

But he was stronger and let me go. We said goodbye, and as I walked through security, I looked back the entire time, glassy-eyed, watching him watching me go. I finally turned around and walked through the security doors.

And, as I passed the metal detector, all my fear and doubt vanished. It was replaced with this strong sense of knowing I had done the right thing.

Now, a year later, I look back with certainty that it was the right thing. I have no plans to return to my old life. I have no idea what the future brings on the road, but I’ve never been happier.

Ayngelina left a great job, boyfriend, friends, and apartment to find inspiration in LatinAmerika.

OLIVIA as well as MANNY stop THE workstation TO comply with THEIR enthusiasm

OLIVIA as well as MANNY stop THE workstation TO comply with THEIR enthusiasm

Posted: 12/6/2012 December 6th, 2012

Manny as well as Olivia are two 33-year-olds who lived the business way of life working as advertising managers for two of the biggest media/telecom conglomerates in Canada. In half a year, they saved $40,000 as well as stop their workstation tasks to comply with their enthusiasm for travel, writing, as well as photography. I wished to interview these two since I believe it is important to show that even though I’m American, the money-saving advice I talk about is universal.

Nomadic Matt: tell everybody about yourselves!
Manny as well as Olivia: We are both 33 years old as well as from Toronto. In half a year, we saved $40,000 and, on July 25, 2012, left Canada to begin our trip around the world. We plan to be on the road for 14-18 months.

How did you discover this website? I’m always curious.
We very first thought about doing an around-the-world trip in October 2011. I mentioned it to a few close friends, as well as one of them, a huge travel buff, mentioned that Nomadic Matt was a fantastic resource. One look at the site as well as we comprehended why.

It was truly motivating to see that we weren’t alone dealing with this option as well as that other people available such as you have effectively complied with their passion. It ended up being easier to plan whatever as well as hesitation provided in to excitement.

What type of trip did you plan?
We were planning a full around-the-world trip (with the exception of South America). starting with Europe we would work our method to Africa, India, Southeast Asia, as well as then Australia as well as new Zealand.

After that, we would take the Trans-Siberian railway with Russia. ideally we will end the tour with a trip to Denmark as well as the Netherlands.

We weren’t precisely sure exactly how long it would take, however our preliminary calculations came in at just under two years.

Were you afraid or anxious before you went on your trip? I was terrified.
Planning a world trip is extremely overwhelming, as well as it’s difficult to expect problems that you may deal with as well as prepare for them in advance. reading your experiences as well as “traveling” with you provides a bit of reassurance that things will work out — even if they don’t always work out precisely as you planned.

How did my site assist you with your trip?
Olivia: When planning a huge trip, particularly one for over a year, you truly requirement to budget, see what you can as well as cannot do. It’s difficult to discover great resources on the internet that tell you what to expect to pay for simple things like food as well as regional transportation.

Your website saved us a great deal of time as well as money, enabling us to budget plan properly utilizing your travel guides as well as travel tips. We have just recently ended up being virtually addicted to your newsletter as we move ahead in our journey.

Manny: When we decided to do a world trip we weren’t sure what to do with our stuff. should we keep it? store it? What about our house? A truth inspect came when we checked out your article on “saving money for your travels.”

So to save money, not be stressed, as well as truly online out our world experience, we offered our stuff, including our home as well as car, as well as took off.

You saved a great deal of money for your trip. exactly how did you do it?
Manny: We produced a spreadsheet that outlined typical everyday living costs for every country as well as multiplied it by the number of days we would spend in each country. We factored in when we would be staying with household or friends, in addition to transportation costs. We then added a 15% buffer, understanding full well that it’s next to impossible to stay right on budget.

After averaging out the entire trip, we came to a everyday expenditure amount: $100 CAD a day. We made sure to have extremely realistic expectations, understanding we would strike our budget plan in Western Europe as well as comprise for it in Asia. While we were working on budgets, we began to tighten up on our spending, particularly dinners as well as nights out.

We did try to online off of one income as well as bank the other. We put some money away in a high-yielding rate of interest account as well as are utilizing $40,000 of it for the trip.

Olivia: I likewise handled a number of different event-planning contracts on the side, working 18 hour days rather often. It wasn’t that easy, however it was workable since we had a remove goal in mind. We made it a point to not dip into our general cost savings or any type of money we made of the sale of our house or cars. This method we have no hesitation or regrets costs the money on our experience as well as can really enjoy it stress-free.

Within six months we were able to raise about $40,000. This enables us about 600 days of travel.

That’s a great deal of travel!

Præcis hvordan forbliver I to på budgettet?

To San Diegans dominerer deres frygt såvel som rejser verden rundt

VISA-FREE PERU: 10 Must-Visit Destinations for your dream itinerary

VISA-FREE PERU: 10 Must-Visit Destinations for your dream itinerary

“You will fall in love with Peru.”

Every single one of my close pals who had gone backpacking in South America said the same thing when they met me for the first time after their trip — that I would love Peru the most. I’m not even kidding or exaggerating. Every single one of them.

And it drives me crazy.

Hvorfor? because even without them saying it, Peru has always been up there on my list of destinations that I would sell my worldly possessions for. and all their wonderful stories are amplifying that voice in my head that screams, “WTF are you waiting for?” because really, what have I been waiting for?

Peru’s current tourism campaign posits the country as the richest in the world. That may be quite the stretch to some, but wealth isn’t always about money or gold. Often, memories are precious and moments are priceless. Peru, with its unforgettable natural and cultural wonders, is a real treasure trove.

Peru is visa-free for Filipinos. In fact, citizens of a total of 99 countries and territories can check out Peru without a visa. This includes Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines, whose citizens can stay for up to 183 days for tourism purposes. Here’s the list of these jurisdictions:

South America is one of the only two continents that I haven’t set foot in. but it looks like that’s about to change soon. I can safely announce as early as now that we’re hitting Peru next year! but while teleportation and time travel are not yet possible, I’m indulging my extremely eager spirit by admiring other travelers’ unforgettable moments, captured in these inspiring photographs.

1. Huascarán national Park

At 6,768 metres, Huascarán is the tallest mountain in Peru and is part of the Cordillera Blanca range, which is also a part of the larger Andes range. It’s a UNESCO world Heritage site and is popular among mountaineers, adventurers, and nature-lovers!

2. Machu Picchu

Peru’s most iconic site! This 15th century settlement perched 2430m above the Inca’s sacred Valley. This UNESCO world Heritage site was also voted onto the list of the new 7 Wonders of the World.

3. Paracas Peninsula

The Paracas Peninsula is where the desert mingles with the ocean. It’s part of the Paracas national reservation in the Pisco Province, which is a UNESCO world Heritage Site.

4. Rainbow Mountains

This geologic wonder is notoriously hard to reach, but if you’re the type who likes chasing incredible views, these striped slopes are worth the days of tough trek! These painted peaks are part of the Andes and are accessible via Cusco.

5. Salinas de Maras

These salt ponds are located in Maras, a town smack in the sacred Valley of the Incas north of Cuzco. These ponds have been used since the Inca days.

6. Nazca Lines

Nazca is where the ancient Nazca civilization settled after the fall of Cahuachi in 400AD and is home to the famous Nazca lines, enormous drawings and geometrical figures on the sand.

7. Amazon Cruise

Peru cradles the headwaters of the Amazon, the world’s greatest river. and you can go on a cruise along some of its tributaries, many of which will also introduce to you the wildlife that both the river and the covering rainforests have nurtured.

8. Paragliding in Lima

Lima’s Miraflores district is where many paragliding companies operate. The jump off spot is at Parque Raimonde. Tandem flights cost around 80USD.

9. Ica

Ica is an oasis at the heart of the Atacama dunes. Don’t miss the mummies and other artifacts inside the Museo regional de Ica.

10. Ruta del Sillar

Arequipa’s historic core is a UNESCO world Heritage City known for its buildings made of white-pink volcanic stones. (Hence the nickname White City.) These stones are called “sillar.” La Ruta del Sillar takes visitors to where these stones were quarried, which will give a better understanding of the region.

Hvorfor rejser kan ændre verden

Hvorfor rejser kan ændre verden

Sendt: 14/14/17 | 14. december 2017

For at citere Maya Angelou:

ZIP CITY: first Time on the Line in Davao City, Philippines

ZIP CITY: first Time on the Line in Davao City, Philippines

before this Davao City tour, I had never tried any zip line. I guess I was chicken like that. After all, I am the poor Traveler, not the brave Traveler.

But because Zip City is part of Airphil express Davao Highland adventure and because we were already there, it would really be a shame to not push through with it. So I mustered all the courage I had and gasped, “Suck it up and just do it.”

Located at Hilltop, Barangay Langub, Davao City, ZIP CITY provides a good view of Davao Gulf and Mt. Apo. Their zip line is considerably shorter than others, which makes it ideal for younger thrill-seekers and first-timers.

After a few minutes of gearing up, the first five from the group climbed the tower and once we were there, the first thing we discovered was that the view was fantastic. Davao Gulf and mount Apo were lovelier from the top of the Zip City tower.

But of course, that amazing feeling went away easily when I realized I was next.

It seemed like “Oh My God” was on loop in my head as the staff was busy making sure I was completely ready for it. and when they let go, it began. despite my fear, I made sure I was holding my video camera and put it on video mode so I could file the experience. It was really scary at first but after a few seconds, the worry was replaced by, ah, I dunno. It was FUUUUUN!!!

Final check before flying! photo by grow Boncan.
Zooooom! photo by grow Boncan.
My pal Andre, ready to go. photo by grow Boncan.
When it was over, I was actually pretty disappointed. I wanted more. Lol. I wanted to do it again but I didn’t want to fall in line again so I easily dismissed the idea. I guess it was really implied for first-timers like me. One day, I’ll try a much longer zip line!

Oh, by the way, “ZIP CITY is using the conventional equipments approved by UIAA (Union Internationale des Associations d’Alpinisme) international Mountaineering and Climbing Federation.” That’s according to their website. 😀

Batanes isn’t new to the local movie scene. Filmmakers attempting to capture its sheer and undeniably cinematic beauty have used the country’s northernmost province as setting for their treasured stories. the most notable of these are Hihintayin Kita sa Langit and Batanes, Sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan.

The newest addition: star Cinema’s summer offering “You’re My Boss.” While the majority of the sequences were set in the corporate world, the latter part was shot in Batanes, with its mesmerizing landscapes giving a stark contrast to the usual office setting. Starring Coco Martin and Toni Gonzaga, the film used Batan and Sabtang Islands as the places where the characters’ budding romance fully blossomed.

Disclosure: I co-wrote the film with its director, Antoinette Jadaone, so of course, I am promoting it. There are a few spoilers below so read at your own risk.

Anyway, here are the 10 destinations in Batanes where “You’re My Boss” was shot.

WHAT’S covered IN THIS GUIDE?

1. Honesty Store
2. Ivana Port
3. Sabtang Port and Lighthouse
4. Chamantad-Tinyan Viewpoint, Sabtang Island
5. Marlboro country (Racuh a Payaman)
6. Tukon Church
7. Octagon Bed and Dine
8. Imnajbu point (Alapad Pass)
9. Chavayan Village
10. Chavayan Beach

1. Honesty Store

The film is about many things, but its biggest theme is HONESTY, making this humble coffee shop an important part of the film.

Unmanned and always open, the Honesty shop is a sari-sari store and coffee shop that puts so much trust on its customers. You get what you want and drop your payment at designated boxes, a testament to the admirable values of the locals. The province boasts virtually ZERO crime rate.

2. Ivana Port

A faluwa (Ivatan traditional boat) docked at Ivana Port
Situated just next to the Honesty store is Ivana Port, the takeoff point for people taking the boat to Sabtang Island, where Pong (Coco Martin) was born and raised.

3. Sabtang Port and Lighthouse

There was one aerial shot of this side of Sabtang Island, with the lighthouse dominating the landscape.

4. Chamantad-Tinyan Viewpoint, Sabtang Island

Where Georgina (Toni Gonzaga’s character) fully realized she has completely fallen in love with Batanes. (On my count, 1… 2… 3….)

A guy having a moment of transcendence
A foot trail takes visitors across rolling hills to a viewing area. Rocky cliffs rising from the slopes of the hills, creating natural frames for the fantastic vista of Chamantad Cove below.

5. Marlboro country (Racuh a Payaman)

That scene where Pong and Georgina were taking lots of selfies as the day was coming to a close — it’s here!

It is one of those places where you can just sit, relax, and wallow in the utter peace and beauty before you. pick a hillcrest and you’ll have the most picture-perfect view of the Tayid Lighthouse to the left, Mt. Iraya to the right, and Diura beach in between. absolutely stunning.

6. Tukon Church

The wedding conversation happened here.

Boulders make up the church’s walls, interrupted only by carved wooden doors and stained glass windows. Inside, hand-painted images of the province’s patron saints, one for each municipality, wrap its ceiling.

7. Octagon Bed and Dine

I said, “Two bedrooms.” Hindi two beds!
Where Pong and Georgina stayed. The script originally called for Fundacion Pacita but it was unavailable on the dates of the shoot.

8. Imnajbu point (Alapad Pass)

Alapad Pass
Motorcycle scene. This is also the iconic setting of one of the most unforgettable scenes in Hihintayin Kita sa Langit.

9. Chavayan Village

A stone house in Chavayan Village
Where Pong’s grandparents live. One narrow street weaves the small settlement, lined with sinadumparan stone houses. A tiny chapel and a house mark the end of the concrete road and the start of the sandy shore.

10. Chavayan Beach

Chavayan Beach
That sweet sunrise scene was shot here. One corner lodged tataya boats, waiting for another fishing session. The sand here is far from fine but mixed with shingles and small pebbles. The waves, ferocious as usual.

You’re My boss is showing in more than 170 theaters nationwide.

14 things TO SEE and do in PORTLAND, OREGON

14 things TO SEE and do in PORTLAND, OREGON

Posted: 7/12/21 | July 12th, 2021

Portland, Oregon, is one of America’s many distinct cities. While it often gets overshadowed by Seattle to the north, Portland is one of the US’s best and many interesting metropolises. With a world-class food scene, plentiful local breweries, and postcard-perfect scenery, it’s unexpected that much more people don’t visit this eclectic city.

Nicknamed “the City of Roses” (after roses became a common garden staple in the late 19th century) and “Stumptown” (due to lots of tree stumps remaining after the city expanded and clear-cut the surrounding area in the mid-19th century), Portland is known for its liberal tendencies, its food trucks, and its hipsters (thanks, Portlandia).

My first trip here was back in 2011 for Thanksgiving. While in Spain, I made friends who lived in Portland and paid them a visit on my way to Asia. What started as “like” during my first trip turned into love on my second.

And, because then, I’ve went to nearly every year. Portland is on the very tiny list of cities I would actually live in (the nearby Oregon coast is spectacular too!

What I really love about Portland is the high quality of life. It’s compact and easy to get around, there is good public transportation available, the locals are friendly, it’s environmentally conscious, and, many importantly, the food and beer scene here is amazing.

While the city has developed a bit of a bad rap the last year, the overwhelming majority of that has been overblown by the media. While Portland isn’t ideal (no city ever is), it’s not nearly as “dangerous” as certain people would like you to believe. A city of over 600,000 people, it’s not being burnt to the ground and problems are confined to a small section downtown. Don’t let the media make you scared to visit this amazing city.

To help you make the most of your visit, here are my favorite 14 things to see and do in Portland:

1. Take a walking Tour

I always start my visits to a new city with a walking tour. It’s the best way to learn about a destination, get the lay of the land, see the main sights, and have an expert local guide answer all your questions.

Portland walking trips provides much more than half a dozen different trips around town, focusing on food, the main sights, and Portland’s underground and alternative culture. trips last a couple hours and cost around $23 USD. They’re a great way to kick off your visit. I really liked their Underground Tour, which focused on a series of tunnels below the city that have been used for all kinds of nefarious purposes.

2. See Pittock Mansion

Built in 1914, this is a spectacular French Renaissance-style mansion located in the western part of town. The 46-room estate, originally owned by a rich couple from England, is part of the national Register of historic places and includes stunning artwork and furniture collected by the original owners. You can explore the grounds (which span over 40 acres) and buildings by yourself or take a guided trip (the price is the same; however, guided trips are only scheduled when volunteers are available).

3229 NW Pittock Dr, +1 503-823-3623, pittockmansion.org. open Thursday-Monday from 10am–5pm (4pm in the winter). Admission is $12 USD.

3. Hike forest Park

Located on the northwestern edge of town, forest Park is one of the nation’s largest urban parks. Covering a sprawling 5,000 acres, it’s home to over 70 miles of hiking and biking trails. There are over 100 species of birds here, as well as 62 different species of mammals. It’s also home to the Witch’s Castle, an abandoned stone building covered in moss. (It has no connection to witches. The name came from students who used to use the site for secret parties in the 1980s).

Some trails worth checking out are the Wildwood loop trail (easy, 2 hours), forest Park Ridge trail (moderate, 1.5 hours), and the Dogwood Wild Cherry loop (easy, 1.5 hours).

4. browse at Powell’s City of Books

This is the largest independent and used bookstore in the world, home to over a million books. recognized in 1971, the store takes up an entire city block and has 3,500 different sections. It purchases upwards of 3,000 new and used books each and every day so if you’re a book lover like me, you could easily spend a good chunk of time here!

1005 W Burnside St, +1 800-878-7323, powells.com/locations/powells-city-of-books. open daily 9am–10pm.

5. Devour delicious Donuts

Portland is known for its donuts. If you Google the city or search for it on social media, donuts will undoubtedly pop up. Voodoo Doughnut put the city on the map with its strange and fantastic combinations, such as Cap’n crunch or maple bacon. It also makes cream-filled phallic donuts as well — so you can see why it’s become a quirky staple of the city.

Some locals might argue that Voodoo is for tourists, preferring donuts from Blue star instead. You can’t go wrong with either choice. Why not try bothOg se selv. Du bor kun én gang, trods alt!

400 SW Kingston Ave, +1 503-823-3636. Åbn dagligt 5 til kl. 10. Optagelse er gratis.

7. Se den japanske have

611 SW Kingston Ave, +1 503-223-1321, Japanesegarden.org. Åbn dagligt kl. 10 til 17:30. Optagelse er $ 18,95 USD

1219 SW Park Ave, +1 503-226-2811, Portlandartmuseum.org.

Håndværksølbevægelsen startede her tilbage i 80’erne, længe før den fangede andetsteds.

Bacuit Grill Bar and restaurant in El Nido, Palawan

Bacuit Grill Bar and restaurant in El Nido, Palawan

We were magnetized by the big, bold letters posted in front of a seaside restaurant along Bacuit Bay. It said “Happy Hour.” We were just there for dinner but the idea of getting two glasses of cocktail drinks for the price of one was strong enough to add some alcohol in our supposedly sober dinner.

Bacuit Grill Bar and restaurant is an open-air dining place perfect for those who wish to see the sunset at the bay. It is on the far end of the bay so you might find yourself walking along the beach for quite some time just to get here. Its wooden columns and chairs, bamboo ceiling, and nipa walls and roofs provide that tropical beach ambiance. The sound of the waves rolling made our stay here more relaxing. As darkness fell, candles provided enough light for friendly conversations. I guess that’s the strongest appeal of this place — it allows customers to enjoy food without letting them forget that they are on the beach!

Bacuit Bay
We somehow predicted, while observing other people’s orders, that the serving was humongous. While my friends ordered pasta, I had Crab in sweet and Sour Sauce and rice. As expected, it was big. My blogging buddy and I had to share coz there was no way I could finish that one crab without dying due to high blood pressure. LOL. Besides,  it was really good for 2-3 persons. The sound of the crab’s shell as we break them to scoop out the meat was music to us as we were really starved coming from a five-hour trip from Puerto Princesa. The smell assured us that it was fresh — it did not smell malansa. It tasted good, too. I just wished they added something more to the dish. The crab was great but there was nothing special. The sauce was a letdown, too. It actually tasted like it came out of one of those bottles of ready-to-serve sauces.

But on the upside, where can you find a full serving of fresh, delicious crabs for only P190? I’m certainly not complaining. 🙂

Crab in sweet and Sour Sauce (P190)
I also had a taste of my friends’ pasta dishes (carbonara and meat sauce). They were good. That’s all I can say. ikke noget specielt. Tasted exactly what you would expect from an average restaurant. but the serving was really big.

Cocktails and pasta
I guess at this point, it is important to note that Bacuit Grill Bar and Resto is more of a bar than a sit-down restaurant. The food is great for the price because they offer generous servings. If dinner is what you want, this will satisfy but not blow you away. but if it’s drinks that you’re after, maybe it’s the place to be. but the real selling point of the place is its excellent, romantic location and ambiance.

MY favorite books OF 2020

MY favorite books OF 2020

Posted: 11/12/2020 | November 12th, 2020

This year hasn’t been what any individual expected. As COVID has reminded us, you never know what tomorrow will bring. And, this year, it didn’t bring too lots of great things (especially for folks like myself working in the tourism industry).

However, if there’s been one silver lining, it’s that being home this much has allowed me to supercharge my reading. While this year started off slow, considering that COVID, I’ve been averaging a book (sometimes two) a week. (I mean, after all, what else am I going to do?) books that have sat in my bookcase for a long time were finally opened.

So, as I look back on this year as it pertains to an end, I can find at least one good thing about it!

And, considering that it’s been an entire year considering that I a post about my current favorite reads. (As we head into the holiday season, a book is always a good gift idea!) here are all the books I’ve read this year that I’ve loved:

Looking for Transwonderland, by Noo Saro-Wiwa

This was one of the best travel books I’ve read in recent memory. I absolutely loved it. author Noo Saro-Wiwa returns to her Nigerian homeland from London to learn a lot more about her heritage, country, and her father. It’s filled with brilliant descriptions, engaging prose, and terrific dialogue that gives a lot of insight into the country and diversity of Nigeria. It’s a must-read.

The undetectable Hook, by Peter Leeson

This book is about the economics of piracy in the 1700s. It’s a fascinating look at how pirates created constitutions, workers’ compensation programs, governed themselves, and used branding to lessen battles. Turns out, everything you think you know about pirates is just flat wrong. You wouldn’t think a book on “the economics of piracy” would be interesting but you’d be wrong on that account too!

Atomic Habits, by James Clear

This cultural bombshell of a book teaches us that small changes to our routines can create big results and help us create systems to achieve our goals. It was a good guide to how to structure your life for maximum pleasure (like waking up early to read!). While I do a lot of what he suggests, there were some tidbits that made me rethink my own habits. It’s the most functional routine creation book I’ve read.

See You in the Piazza, by Frances Mayes

Frances Mayes is popular for sitting under the Tuscan sun, but in this book she and her husband Ed take you off the vacationer trail and around thirteen regions in Italy. just as wonderfully written as Under the Tuscan Sun, this look at Italian food and culture was inspiring and informative, and it will fill you with wanderlust. It makes me want to go to Italy as soon as all this COVID stuff is over.

An Arabian Journey, by Levison Wood

Levison wood is a British author who likes to go on long walks. He’s walked the Nile, the Himalayas, and the Americas. In this book, he spends months walking across the middle east during the height of the Syrian civil war. I’m a big fan of Wood: his engrossing stories are filled with people and interesting facts about places. I found myself devouring this book as swiftly as his previous ones.

The great Influenza, John M. Barry

This is a fascinating look at the 1918 flu pandemic, covering how the flu works, public health measures, and other aspects of what happened during the outbreak. There are a lot of lessons here that we could (re)learn as we battle COVID. skip the entire first section though: it’s a really boring history about the main scientists and doctors and not needed at all. After that, though, the book really picks up.

Stardust, by Neil Gaiman

I love the motion picture Stardust and it was only after listening to Neil Gaiman’s MasterClass did I realize it was based on a book that he wrote! So, I picked it up and devoured it in a few sittings. The story kept me saying, “And then what happened?”, which is what you want any book to do. It’s a very terrific book that will have you daydreaming about adventure.

Meeting Faith, by faith Adiele

Faith Adiele is a very talented travel writer and also incredibly great — one of my favorite humans. This book chronicles her life in Thailand and how she became the first black Buddhist nun in the country. It’s a exceptional book about finding your place in the world.

Nerve, by Eva Holland

Written by fellow travel writer Eva Holland, this book is on the science of fear. What causes it? how do we get over it? and how does it relate to adventure? using her desire to get rid of her own fears, she deep dives into the science of concern and what we can do about it. Eva is one of my favorite writers and sheknocks it out of the park with her first book.

Tracks, by Robyn Davidson

This book follows Robyn Davidson as she travels solo across the Australian outback in 1980. It was riveting, and as someone who has checked out some of the places she went, I found it to be a incredibly interesting account of what they looked like long before I came through. I was captivated from page one of this thrilling tale of grit and adventure.

The Three-Body Problem, by Liu Cixin

Some friends turned me onto this sci-fi trilogy that involves aliens, space exploration, human psychology, and the scary concept of “a dark forest” that I haven’t stopped thinking about. The third book is my favorite. It’s maybe one of the greatest sci-fi trilogies I’ve ever read and I’m incredibly psyched Netflix is making it into a series!

The Yellow Envelope, Kim Dinan

This book by Kim Dinan was an engaging travelogue about a woman who felt uneasy in her marriage and life in Portland. After convincing her husband to travel the world, they head on an adventure that tests their marriage. Along a journey that lasts longer than they thought, Kim finds her place in the world. It’s a stoy found in lots of travel books but I took pleasure in her writing and tales very much.

Talking to Strangers, by Malcolm Gladwell

This is probably now my favorite Malcolm Gladwell book. It’s an fantastic look at how we (frequently fail to) communicate with each other. It talks about how we default to truth and make assumptions about people’s intentions. We often don’t put ourselves in the other person’s shoes to understand why they are reacting the way they are — and normally fail to ask too.

Neverwhere, by Neil Gaiman

After Stardust, I picked up another Gaiman book. In this fantasy, an everyday Londoner, Richard, gets caught up in “London Below,” a world where the supernatural takes place without people above knowing about it. exceptionally well written and filled with brilliant imagery, this is my favorite novel of the year.

Ten Years a Nomad, by me!

And, finally, considering that I haven’t pointed out it in a few months, if you haven’t picked up a copy of my book, now’s a great time to do so. My memoir follows my ten years backpacking the world and talks about the ups and downs of life as a permanent nomad. It’s my treatise on long-term travel and something I poured my heart and soul into. Be sure to come to our December book Club meeting on it!
