Første gang i fuld farve: Mit skarpe 100 -års jubilæumsmoment

Første gang i fuld farve: Mit skarpe 100 -års jubilæumsmoment

PETRONAS twin TOWERS and Suria KLCC: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

PETRONAS twin TOWERS and Suria KLCC: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

earlier that day, when our tour guide announced that we had entered the city of Kuala Lumpur, I quickly moved to a window seat and started searching the skies for an imposing structure — the Petronas Towers. When I looked at our itinerary before this trip, I was familiar with these twin towers only. prior to this trip, I had not heard of the Thean Hou temple or the Merdeka Square. The Petronas Towers, I have to admit, were the only man-made structure in Malaysia that I was familiar with. That’s why I was really excited when it was finally time to check out this iconic landmark.

Also known as Menara Berkembar Petronas in local language, the Petronas twin Towers held the record as the world’s tallest buildings from 1998 to 2004. The twins lost the title to Taipei 101 in Taiwan but they remain the tallest twin buildings, according to the Council on tall buildings and urban habitat (CTBUH) official rankings.

The towers were designed by Cesar Pelli, an Argentine architect; Deejay Cerico, a Filipino-Malaysian engineer; and Dominic Saibo, another Filipino designer. The seven-year construction of these twin giants wrapped up in 1998.

When we hopped out of our tour bus, we were led to the lobby of the towers. Briefly, we gathered and listened to some last minute reminders by our Guide. We agreed to spend the next two hours within the complex and return to the lobby after. since it was almost noon, we headed straight to a food court at Suria KLCC.

The Malaysian flag displayed proudly near the entrance; the facade of the Petronas Towers; the ceiling at the main lobby.

Widely regarded as the country’s premier shopping destination, Suria KLCC is located at the base of the Petronas Towers, occupying 6 levels. The shopping center formally opened on August 31, 1999.

Upon setting foot on the place, I was reminded of Glorietta and Trinoma. I don’t know why but it had that “Ayala Mall” atmosphere. From where we stood, we could see several delightful stores including books Kinokuniya. There are a number of gadget stores, department stores, fashion boutiques, and restaurants. There was also a supermarket and a cinema complex.

Suria KLCC, a shopping complex at the base of the Petronas twin Towers
We were told that there’s a park at the base of the tower with walking and jogging trails, playgrounds, and pools. Unfortunately, our very limited time did not permit us to explore or even see it.

When we returned to the lobby, we were also told by our guide that next time we come to Kuala Lumpur, we should try the SkyBridge between the two buildings on the 41st-42nd levels. Yes, maybe next time.

7 things to do in Chinatown Singapore: A diy Heritage walking trip

7 things to do in Chinatown Singapore: A diy Heritage walking trip

Our Day 3 in Singapore started early. We were up as early as 7am. The first item on our schedule for that day was the Chinatown Heritage walking Tour, which I was very thrilled about because I had never been to this part of Singapore before. note that it is a do-it-yourself tour. even before the trip, I already identified the places to go to so I somehow knew what to expect. Armed with just a map, my mother and I headed to Telok Ayer street for a relaxing, and hopefully enlightening, walk around Chinatown.

Although part of Singapore Chinatown, Telok Ayer street boasts of multi-religious buildings and structures. aside from a Chinese temple, the street is also home to a mosque, a Methodist Church and an Indian shrine. Confused? velkommen i klubben. but that’s what makes this place much more endearing. It tells you so much about how Singapore values diversity in culture and religion.

How to get to Telok Ayer Street

We were coming from G4 Backpackers’ Hostel in little India and we only took the MRT to get to Telok Ayer Street. Here’s how we did it:

From little India MRT station (North east Line), take the train going to Harbourfront.

Alight at Outram Park

Transfer to east West Line and take the train heading for Pasir Ris.

Alight at Tanjong Pagar

Look for exit G. follow the signs.

From Tanjong Pagar Station, you will easily see a building practically best across — the Chinese Methodist Church.

A long time ago, Telok Ayer was on the beachfront. So when you start walking, think of yourself walking on the beach as you marvel at these wonderful temples and heritage houses. Hehe. It should have been completely different then. Regardless, Telok Ayer is still a terrific place to check out because buildings are restored and well-preserved.

Here are the interesting structures that you will delight in as you walk around the area:

1. Telok Ayer Chinese Methodist Church

Chinese Methodist Church
One of Singapore’s earliest Chinese Christian churches, the Telok Ayer Chinese Methodist Church  features a combination of oriental and western influences. The Chinese-style roofing system caps this building but its Art Deco features can be discovered in the windows.

Because we were really hungry, we chose to get a quick breakfast at Amoy street Food Centre. It was still very early so only a few food stalls were open. thankfully for us, we found a stall that we really liked. You may choose to eat here or if you’re not hungry, finish this walk first and then walk to Maxwell Food Centre, which is just around the corner.

Amoy Food Centre
2. Al-Abrar Mosque (Masjid Al-Abrar)

Al Abrar Mosque
Al-Abrar Mosque started out as a thatched hut in 1827. This humble beginning is why it is called by its other name “Kuchu Palli,” which implies “small mosque” in Tamil. It is also called Masjid Chulia because this was where immigrants from Coromandal coast in southern India worshiped.

This mosque has come a long way from being a thatched hut. between 1850 and 1855, it underwent a series of transformation. but much of what we see today is a product of the comprehensive 1986 renovation.

3. Thian Hock Keng

Thian Hock Keng
Thian Hock Keng is probably my favorite part of the walking tour. It was just a stand-out! The facade or the gates were beautiful and its interior was even better. The main prayer hall is home to an image of the Queen of Heaven. beside it are Bao Sheng Da Di, the Protector of Life and Guan Ti, the God of War. They say that this temple is mainly Taoist but there are Confucian and Buddhist elements in it too.

Said to be the oldest Chinese temple in Singapore, this stunning structure started out as a humble joss house in 1821-1822. It was built to honor the Protector of Sojourners, Ma Zu Po. That’s why in its early years, Chinese immigrants would check out this place to give thanks for safe travel. Centuries ago, this temple was actually on the beach and it was the first place that Chinese travelers would go to when they reach the island.

From 1839 to 1842, the humble joss house went through a major reconstruction using Chinese techniques. The reconstruction was started by philanthropist Tan Tock Seng. the most amazing part of how it was constructed was the fact that the whole structure was supported by only wooden and brick walls and nowhere in the temple will you find nails. Not a single one.

The design of everything in the place is just mind-blowing. everything is intricately made. I just can’t. just can’t. SMUK!

Inside Thian Hock Keng Temple
Figures inside Thian Hock Keng
You see the lower best part of the photo above? That’s one of the door guards that’s expected to safeguard the temple.

The one thing that I liked the most being in this temple was that while I was taking pictures, I realized that although I was in an ancient site, I could still see the gorgeous, modern buildings. It’s an overwhelming mixture of the past and the present of Singapore.

Note that photography is allowed in many parts of the temple but NOT in the main prayer hall.

4. Nagor Durgha Shrine

Nagore Durgha Shrine
A few yards from Thian Hock Keng stands the Nagore Durha, a stunning Indian shrine, which I thought looked like a huge layered cream cake. : D

Originally called Shahul Hamid, this Indian Muslim shrine was built in 1828-1830 by muslim immigrants from southern India. This discusses the pretty combination of classical and Indian Muslim elements in its architecture. The facade features an arched doorway in between arched windows. above the windows and the doorway is an elaborate lace-like design that resembles a palace. In the corners are tall layered minarets.

5. Amoy Street

Amoy Street
After getting blown away by Nagor Durgha, turn left onto the street perpendicular to Telok Ayer — Boon Tat Street.  then turn left again onto Amoy Street. It’s a beautiful, unwinded street (maybe because it was a Sunday when we were there). walk down Amoy street and see the numerous second transitional style shophouses there. You’ll see a lot of various influences in the architecture of the houses on this street.

Walk until you reach the end of the road and you’ll find yourself at the Amoy street Food Centre again. From here, you may choose to go back to the Tanjong Pagar MRT station or if you’re hungry, find your way to the Maxwell Food center nearby.

6. Buddha Tooth Relic museum and Temple

Buddha Tooth Relic temple and Museum
Standing just across the Maxwell Food center is the Buddha Tooth Relic temple and Museum. opened in 2007, the Tang-style structure houses sacred Buddhist artifacts including bone and tongue relics, the most treasured of which is the tooth relic exhibited on the fourth floor.

From here, continue walking along South Bridge road and explore the rest of the Chinatown Proper. You’ll see plenty of shops, eateries, and museums along Mosque, Temple, and Pagoda Streets.

7. Chinatown Heritage Centre

Inside Chinatown Heritage Centre
Located along Pagoda Street, the Chinatown Heritage Centre showcases the history and heritage of the early Chinese migrants in Singapore in a restored three-story shophouse.

From here, the MRT Chinatown station can easily be reached on foot.

THE 10 best HOSTELS IN new YORK CITY

THE 10 best HOSTELS IN new YORK CITY

Last Updated: 02/22/22 | February 22nd, 2022

New York City may be the city that never sleeps, but it’s absolutely hard to find a (cheap) place to sleep here.

Accommodation in nyc is not low-cost — and it’s typically hard to find deals.

That’s (in part) by design.

There used to be a lot of hostels in NYC, but the hotel lobby got the city to use an old law indicated to block tenements and limit the number of people that could stay in a single room. This successfully shut down a lot of of the hostels in town, except for a few that were grandfathered in.

Now you’re only going to find a few hostels left.

Demand outstrips supply.

Even though there aren’t hundreds of hostels to choose from, there are enough to make a “best hostels in NYC” post, so you’ll know which are worth staying at (there are a few that are really horrible and to be avoided).

Over the years, I’ve stayed in dozens upon dozens of places. The top four when picking the best hostel in nyc are:

Location – new York is substantial and it can take some time to get around. All the hostels provided here are in central locations.

Price – In NYC, you really get what you pay for, so if you opt for a really low-cost one, you’re probably going to get a hostel that is small, cramped, and doesn’t offer terrific service.

Amenities – Every hostel in the city uses complimentary Wi-Fi, and some have a complimentary breakfast, but if you want a lot more than that, be sure to do your research to find the hostel that best meets your needs!

Staff – All the hostels provided here have fantastic staff! They are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. even if you don’t end up staying at one of the places provided below, be sure to look up reviews to make sure you end up somewhere where the staff is valuable and friendly! De kan lave eller bryde et hostel!

To help you plan your trip, here is my list of the hostels in new York City that I like the most.

Best overall Hostel: HI NYC
Best Hostel for budget Travelers: Q4 Hotel
Best Hostel for Families: American Dream
Best Hostel for Solo female Travelers: Chelsea international Hostel
Best Hostel for digital Nomads: The Local

How to get to Wulingyuan (Zhangjiajie) from Guilin, China

How to get to Wulingyuan (Zhangjiajie) from Guilin, China

Zhangjiajie was not part of our plan.

I was supposed to exhaust all 14 days that my visa enabled me completely in Guilin as well as Yangshuo. however when I stumbled upon a picture of the Tianzi Mountains while planning for this trip, I understood that I had to capture it into my already solid itinerary.

But there were a few problems:
1. Zhangjiajie is a bit as well far from Guilin, my entry point in China.
2. There are no direct flights from Guilin to Zhangjiajie, as well as making a connection can be expensive.
3. There are no direct trains from Guilin to Zhangjiajie.

When I landed in Guilin that day, I was keen on taking the bus to Zhangjiajie, however for the life of me, I couldn’t discover where the buses where. I discovered a bus terminal (same street as the train station), however there were no buses to Zhangjiajie when we asked. We were told that there were buses to the remote city at the train station. Off we went, however still couldn’t discover it. The language barrier wasn’t helping, either.

We decided to take the train to Zhangjiajie instead, linking in either Liuzhou or Changsha. Here’s how.

Hvad er dækket i denne vejledning?

1. Train from Guilin to Liuzhou or Changsha City, as well as then to Zhangjiajie.
2. Minibus from Zhangjiajie City to Wulingyuan

1. Train from Guilin to Liuzhou or Changsha City, as well as then to Zhangjiajie.

There are a great deal of choices throughout the day. see travel guide China to see the schedule. select one that finest fits your schedule. Don’t fail to remember to think about the following:

Rejsetid. Some trains make more stops than others, therefore taking a great deal more time. Be conscious of the arrival time in Changsha or Liuzhou as well as make sure there is sufficient time to catch the next train without waiting as well long.

Terminal. There is a Guilin station as well as a Guilin North Station, a Changsha station as well as a Changsha South Station. Make sure you develop your jigsaw itinerary right.

Seats as well as Fare. To provide you an concept on exactly how much budget plan to allocate for a ticket, here’s a snapshot of the usual rates from Guilin to Changsha.

And here’s a snapshot of the usual fare from Changsha to Zhangjiajie.

And just like that, you’re in Wulingyuan District. Important notes:

1. book in advance. Long-distance tickets can go offered out quickly particularly during peak season (May-October). While there are fair possibilities that you might still snag same-day tickets at the railway station (that’s what we did), it wouldn’t hurt to be risk-free as well as book early. Reservations open 60 days before travel date.

2. Be gotten ready for delays as well as long waits. You may discover yourself costs hours at the terminal waiting on your train so make sure you eat well before your trip. There are convenience stores inside the station however choices are rather limited.

3. Be gotten ready for the crowd. Some trains enable people onboard who have no tickets. trust me, I was one of them. There were no more seats however I was still able to get a ticket. I stayed at the area in between cars and trucks as well as sat on the floor. I wasn’t alone, though.

One more thing: English is not well comprehended in Guilin or Zhangjiajie. To make booking tickets easier, ask an able good friend to compose down your destinations or routes in Chinese characters. Our trip to Zhangjiajie from Guilin was such a struggle. When we shown up at our hostel, we asked the extremely friendly receptionist to equate the names of locations for us, as well as it made our return trip to Guilin as smooth as butter.

Billige ferieideer: 8 Budgetferie tilbud

Billige ferieideer: 8 Budgetferie tilbud

Sidst opdateret: 6/16/21 | 16. juni 2021

Hvor ofte besøger du feriepladserne i din egen by?

Billig ferieidee 2: Rejse regionalt

I grew up in Boston, and from there, I could visit new Hampshire, the woods of Maine, the bed-and-breakfasts of the Berkshires, or the farms of Vermont. new York was a four-hour car ride from home. how often did I do that? Not often enough!

Exploring your own region is an underrated and often overlooked aspect of travel. It gets the occasional lip service in magazines, but driving across the united states made me realize how much our own countries have to offer us and how often we ignore that for some foreign place.

Lær meget mere -> Sådan road trip over USA for $ 50 om dagen

Nat i USA, $ 15-40 CAD i Canada, $ 10-60 AUD i Australien og $ 17-22 NZD i New Zealand.

Krydstogter tilbyder altid ekstraordinære tilbud i sidste øjeblik. Intet krydstogtselskab ønsker at overlade halvdelen af hytterne tomme. Hvis du venter til et par uger før afgang, kan du normalt finde nogle virkelig fantastiske tilbud, da krydstogtskibe krypteres for at finde passagerer. Plus, krydstogtoperatører kaster altid nogle ombordfaciliteter, gratis opgraderinger og kontante værdikuponer for at sødme aftalen.

Billig ferieidee 5: Tænk uden for kassen

Glem Mexico og gå til Guatemala. Spring over Paris og kør mod Budapest. Ditch Italy and see Greece (it’s really cheap!). forget Brazil and take on Bolivia instead. The list goes on and on. There are numerous cheap options and budget destinations around the world!

Travel counter to the prevailing trend.

Zig when everyone zags.

If people are going in the summer, you go in the spring or winter. skip the popular destinations and head off the beaten path a bit.

Contrarian travel will save you a bundle of money. It’s like reverse commuting. While others heading into the city in the morning for work are stuck in traffic, you breeze the opposite way hassle-free. The same is true for travel.

The a lot more you are a contrarian in where — and when you go — the better off you’re purse will be. Plus, you’ll take pleasure in destinations a lot more because there will be fewer crowds. no one likes a crowd!

Cheap holiday idea 6: book a last-minute Tour

Just like cruises, trips are best booked last-minute. excursion companies need to fill the seats just like cruise companies, because once that trip departs, they still have the same costs. last-minute excursion bookings work the same way as cruise bookings.

Why are trips so cheap last-minute? Well, think about how people plan vacations. You get the time off work, you book your vacation, you get your flight, and you go. considering that people pre-book, prices are higher in development because these companies understand booking patterns and then price accordingly.

As departure time nears, companies know people aren’t likely to turn up and book on departure day, so they sweeten the price to increase bookings. So take the time off work, wait until the week before, see what’s cheap, and then go.

My favorite company, Intrepid Travel, often uses 15–30% discounts on last-minute tours.

Cheap holiday idea 7: Become a house Sitter

Accommodation can eat into the cost of a trip big-time. You might get a flight deal, but then lodging — even if you can find it cheaply — might push the cost of your trip into unaffordable territory.

A way around that is to stay somewhere for free. While I like Couchsurfing, it’s hard to do that for two weeks without annoying your host. A special way to get rid of this is to housesit for someone while they are on vacation. You get complimentary accommodation, a kitchen to cook in, and the chance to explore a destination in depth. It’s a pretty special way to travel and one that I know a lot of world travelers take advantage of. You can even do this in your own region too, to cut down on transportation costs.

The best way to safe housesitting gigs is to build up your portfolio of reviews by starting small. find opportunities near you so safe a few reviews before you start competing for housesitting gigs in popular places like nyc or Paris (since those are a lot more competitive). If you’re ready to do housesits in “less popular” destinations you can easily find opportunities.

LEARN a lot more —> how to become a Housesitter

Cheap holiday idea 8: Grab a cheap Flight

Nowadays, you don’t have to guess where the most affordable flight from your home would be. You can look up a whole list of flights (from most affordable to increasingly a lot more expensive) using a site like Momondo or Google Flights.

With those sites, you can type in “(the closest airport to you)” for your departure city and “everywhere” for your destination. then a list of the most affordable flights appears in front of your very eyes, so you can choose where to go within your budget. This is how I decide where to go when I don’t have a certain place in mind. It’s a great tool!

Here are some other great airline booking sites where you can find deals:

Skyscanner – Skyscanner has a very intuitive platform that lets you search for an open-ended trip. If you’re not 100% sure where you want to go (or when) then start your search with Skyscanner.

Kiwi – Kiwi recently updated their search platform, making it much a lot more intuitive and u

How To Make money as well as travel The world As a Divemaster

How To Make money as well as travel The world As a Divemaster

This is a guest publish from the adventurous Sarah over at Coffee With a slice of Life. We’re stoked that she wished to show us what it’s like being a Divemaster as well as living in paradise. This is absolutely one of the very best travel tasks we can believe of. inspect out this post as well as ideally get inspired!

I had pieced together my dream job/situation while backpacking with Latin America last year. Every spine tingling moment, every experience that took my breath away, every believed of “I desire I might stay right here forever” played a part in the final draft of what it was I truly wished to do.

After all, there was no method I might clear up for a 9-5 task in London now that I had seen what it was like to online in different cultures as well as countries.

After my trip, I understood it. I understood for the very first time what I truly wished to do. There are many travel jobs, however this was it.

Become a Divemaster on a Liveaboard.

I wished to be in a country I had never been to before, where the waters were warm as well as the sun was warmer. I wished to be somewhere I might continue working on my blog, as well as shamefully to say, somewhere with Web so I might make this point achievable. ending up being a Divemaster seemed like the best option.

In the back of my mind, as well as when I stated it out loud, I understood this might potentially be one of those dreams that never ended up being a reality. then I got upset at myself for doubting it. After all, I was the last person I would let come between me as well as my dreams.

So I went for it.

Becoming a Divemaster

In buy to online out my dream, I needed to total my Divemaster Course. You requirement to be a Rescue Diver with over 40 dives under your belt to apply. To qualify as a Divemaster, you need to have completed the needed course, be a rescue diver as well as have at least 60 logged dives. nothing else except a great personality is needed!

I spent 2 1/2 months in Turkey with great buddies while acquiring my certification. I did my program over the span of 2 months, so I got about 100 dives in! The program cost 1,000 GBP ($1,500 USD), which included 2 months accommodation in a personal space as well as unrestricted diving with equipment.

I understood the only thing left was for me to knuckle down as well as apply for each Divemaster task going.

And that I did.

Applying For A Job

I most likely sent over 60 emails applying for a job. I sent emails to business that weren’t even seeking to hire. When I heard nothing back, I emailed once again to inspect if they got my very first one.

PadiPro web site was such a fantastic source for task hunting! I was on it daily inspecting for new task postings, as well as nearly always I got a reply back. In truth I had a few Skype interviews as well as was even used a task in the Caribbean, which I turned down as it was working in the dive shop rather than in the water. I was quite focused on not losing sight of my dream job, as well as was ecstatic that it was looking possible.

There was one string of emails that looked promising: working on the world’s largest as well as very first liveaboard in Micronesia. I had absolutely no concept where Micronesia was. even when I googled it, I still wasn’t sure where it was found – ideally this map will assist you out!

So of program I hounded the owner, a lot of days. I sent him photos of what I was as much as (I was back in Turkey paragliding), to show him I was adventurous. I sent him links to my blog articles to show him a lot more of my character as well as generally just tried as difficult as I might to persuade him I was worth the risk!

All of my persistence paid off. I was used the task just before Christmas last year!!

And right here I am now.

I’m typing this while enjoying the sun go down on the Pacific ocean (yes, we have Web on board!!)

En dag i livet

My everyday routine on the boat starts at 6:00 am with a dive satisfying to choose which 5 wrecks (of the 60) in Truk Lagoon we’ll dive that day. then a breakfast of my choice – fresh fruit, eggs as well as breads. very first dive is at 8:00 am, then back to theboat for snacks. The second dive is at 11:00 am, complied with by a 3 program lunch to replace any type of burnt calories, as well as then back to the ocean for 2:00 pm as well as 5:00 pm dives.

We have dinner as well as then there’s an optional night dive at 8:00 pm. By then I am absolutely shattered as well as hibernate to my own personal space as well as autumn asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow. then I’m up once again a few hours later to do everything over.

Salary as well as advantages Of The job

To be honest, the wages are low. It’s difficult to make a ‘living’ out of diving, however it’s the extraordinary way of life that you indication up for. I make $25 a day as well as normally get about $300 in ideas a month.

However, if you take into account the complimentary food and accommodation, you are not much worse off than if you were working a 9-5 task as well as paying a mortgage…and the benefits are a great deal better. I get to satisfy people from around the world, have fantastic experiences, network with people, as well as undoubtedly the complimentary diving is quite great! Some people pay numerous dollars of what I get for free!

Pros as well as Cons

I believe I’ve gone with a great deal of the pros, however there are likewise a few cons of being a dive master on a liveaboard. It is lonely on the boat when there are no clients as well as you get type of ill of working with the exact same people week in, week out.  For me, I crave a mixed drink as well as some girly gossip! If you just want to choose a walk as well as get away from it all, you can’t do that on a boat, the furthest you can walk is to the deck. Also, work is never over when you online at work.. even on your day off.

Why I like Being a Divemaster

Divers come from far as well as large to find the underwater mysteries of Truk Lagoon, as well as I get to satisfy all type of fascinating people. however what I like the most about working as a Divemaster is that as soon as I’m in the water, my age as well as life experiences dissolve with the salt as well as the clients depend on as well as respect my position. They listen to whatever I have to state (or enjoy my underwater signs!), which is an exceptionally satisfying feeling.

Sometimes I believe it is crazy exactly how I ended up here. From piecing together my dream task to really doing it is an overwhelming sense of achievement. I look back to when I produced my dream task in my mind as well as laugh at my forwardness as well as courage. however if it wasn’t for the commitment to my dream, I never would have ended up here.

The a lot of crucial thing I have learnt with the whole process is that anything is possible, as well as a dream only stays a dream if you let it!

Shark Friday!

Check out this incredible video…but be warned, you’ll want to ended up being a Divemaster immediately!

Do you have a dream job? What’s stopping you going for it? If you truly REALLY want it you can do it too!

4 Highlights of our Kakadu national Park Day Tour, Australia

4 Highlights of our Kakadu national Park Day Tour, Australia

The boat approached a nook along the Mary River, parting the sea of lotus lilies along the way. Our driver and guide Reuben moored the boat and rose from his seat. “It’s been a wonderful afternoon; thank you for spending it with me,” he said before revealing a bottle of champagne.

It wasn’t just the afternoon that had been wonderful to us. From that first step into the AAT Kings bus down to that jump out of it at the end of the day, every single moment we had on that tour was nothing but pleasant. Kakadu had been nothing but accommodating and cooperative. She gave us most of what we visited her for: a peek at her cultural past and a closer look at her biodiversity.

Our journey began in Darwin, 171 kilometers northwest of Kakadu. Darwin is the closest major city to the national park, but it took us more than three hours to get there. Spanning over 20,000 sq. km of forests, wetlands, and savannas, it is the largest national park in Australia, about half the size of Switzerland and nearly the size of Slovenia. because of its ecological and cultural value, the UNESCO listed it a world Heritage site in 1981.

Here are the four highlights of our day tour around Kakadu.

WHAT’S covered IN THIS GUIDE?

1. Ubirr rock Art Site
2. Nadab Lookout
3. Bowali visitor Center
4. Mary River Cruise

1. Ubirr rock Art Site

The story of Mabuyu and its lessons are painted on the rocks of Ubirr.
Kakadu national Park has the richest collection of aboriginal rock art. Ubirr is just one of the three world-famous art sites in the area; the other two are Burrunguy (Nourlangie) and Nanguluwur. The enormous rocks of Ubirr pepper the edge of Nadab floodplain and the east Alligator River, making them optimal shelter locations for the Aboriginal people. Their paintings have been adorning the rock shelters in the area for thousands of years. The reasons for making these paintings vary from religious to educational.

Most of the artworks here are images of food items: barramundi, catfish, and goannas. even the now extinct thylacine, last seen in the 20th century, is immortalized on one cliff along the main gallery.

2. Nadab Lookout

The rocky slope of Nadab Lookout
Nadab Lookout is a rocky crag that rises on the edge of Ubirr and overlooks a part of Arnhem Land. The climb to the top is easy, but a marvelous sight awaits. The lookout allows a panoramic view of the Nadab floodplains, where the savanna meets the grasslands, and the grass gives way to the marshes.

3. Bowali visitor Center

Inside Bowali visitor Center
I initially wanted to skip this but decided to push through with it at the last minute. good decision. It offers a wealth of knowledge to tourists exploring Kakadu. The center showcases the history, culture, and biodiversity of the national park. emphasis on biodiversity because if you’re going to do a Mary River cruise (like I did), a check out here would serve as an introduction to the rich and colorful wildlife of the area.

They also have a small cafe, which makes it an optimal afternoon tea stop.

4. Mary River Cruise

Mary River is just one of the eight rivers snaking across the top End, and it is known for having the world’s highest concentration of saltwater crocodiles. This makes it an optimal place to spot salties and its less aggressive cousin, the freshies (freshwater crocodiles).

A ranger boat roaming around the wetlands.
The tour usually starts or ends at the Corroboree Billabong, where a guide would lead an hour-long boat ride. Along the way, we spotted several salties and freshies, and a wide array of birds. Our guide Reuben was very generous with information, and made the afternoon a lot more insightful than I expected. We closed the trip by raising a glass cup of champagne as we were moored in one nook of the lotus-covered river.
