Landet virker mere overfladisk.

Royal Caribbean Ovation of the Seas: Cruise Guide for First-Timers

Royal Caribbean Ovation of the Seas: Cruise Guide for First-Timers

Vi havde for nylig mulighed for at prøve Hong Kong-Okinawa-sæsonen i Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas.

Udfyld online formularen.

Kai Tak Cruise Terminal
33 Shing Fung Road, Kowloon Bay, Kowloon

Dine tasker leveres bedst lige uden for dit værelses dørtrin.

American Icon Grill (hoved spisestue)

Grande Restaurant (hoved spisestue)

Silke (hoved spisestue)

Chic (hoved spisestue)

Cafe Promenade

Kystkøkken

Sorrentos New York Pizzeria

Caféen ved to70

Seaplex hundehus (hotdog stand)

Wonderland

Chops Grille: Det nye amerikanske steakhouse

Chef’s Table: En fem-retters Steakhouse Treat (Inside Chops Grille)

Izumi, japansk restaurant

WHEN YOUR airplane drops 20,000 FT as well as THE OXYGEN MASKS decrease

WHEN YOUR airplane drops 20,000 FT as well as THE OXYGEN MASKS decrease

>Posted: 01/28/2013 | January 28th, 2013

Last week, I woke up at 4am to begin a long journey to the Bahamas, for a quick four-day trip. It was going to be a long day with extremely bit sleep.

First, Boston to new York, then to Fort Lauderdale before taking my final flight to the Bahamas.

I was flying United, my least preferred carrier, however the ticket was free, so I had bit option in the matter.

Shortly after I boarded my airplane in NYC, the security rundown began to play.

“When the seat belt indication illuminates, you should fasten your seat belt. Insert the metal fittings one into the other as well as tighten by pulling on the loose end of the strap… In the event of a decompression, an oxygen mask will immediately appear in front of you. To begin the flow of oxygen, pull the mask toward you. location it firmly over your nose as well as mouth… although the bag does not inflate…” as well as so on.

I’ve heard the security rundown countless times, so I tuned it out as well as nodded off to sleep.

Pop. Pop. Pop.

I woke as much as the noise of my eardrums popping.

“Hvad sker der?” I thought, shifting in my seat as well as trying to autumn back asleep.

Pop. Pop. Pop.

As my eardrums began to noise like popcorn in a microwave, I couldn’t autumn back asleep. They were small, regular pops, as well as in my zombie-like state, I couldn’t location why this was happening.

I opened my eyes in a haze when it happened.

All of a sudden, the oxygen masks deployed from above. I looked confusedly at the people next to me. as well as then in the seats around me. There had been no turbulence. Was this a mistake? half asleep, I didn’t understand what to make of it.

All of a sudden, a voice boomed over the PA system. “Put on your masks.”

Holy crap! This was no mistake.

I reached for my mask. exactly how did that security rundown go again? “In the event of an emergency, oxygen masks will deploy…” I tried to keep in mind in my sleepy state. besides those security briefings, you recognize you’ve ended up being numb to them, tuned them out. then when an emergency happens, you think, “What the heck do I do again?”

I put on the mask as well as fumbled to tighten the strings, taking unnecessarily deep breaths, concerned that if I didn’t, I’d suffocate. I looked around. The company traveler next to me kept reading the paper. The lady sitting diagonally from me as well as the couple to my best all looked petrified. in front of me, I might hear a lady telling her kids, “Mommy likes you, mom likes you,” over as well as over again.

As the circumstance unfolded, I believed to myself that we had most likely just lost cabin pressure, as well as it was nothing to concern about. We hadn’t taken a dive; we hadn’t hit turbulence.

But minutes passed.

And they kept passing.

There were no announcements about what was going on. Of course, I desired the pilots solving problems, not chatting with me, however the dearth of info made those minutes last forever.

Then suddenly, we dropped — as well as we dropped fast.

My heart leaped out of my chest. “Maybe there is something truly wrong with the plane!”

All those fears I have about heights as well as flying were all of a sudden realized.

There is nothing scarier than having your airplane decrease 20,000 feet in seconds. It’s a feeling I never want to experience once again in my life.

We soon leveled out, as well as I later discovered that when you lose cabin pressure, you have to decrease below 10,000 feet to avoid a loss of consciousness.

Soon, the flight attendants walked casually down the aisle using their masks. If you ask any type of regular flier, they’ll always tell you that if the flight attendants aren’t scared, you don’t requirement to be either.

Finally, the captain came on the PA system as well as explained that, yes, the cabin had lost pressure and, no, there was nothing to concern about, however yes, we would be making an emergency landing.

You always question exactly how you’d react in a circumstance like this. When those masks autumn as well as your airplane descends rapidly, will your life flash before your eyes? will everybody be screaming? will it be chaos? will you understand what to do?

Surprisingly, none of that happened. My life didn’t flash before my eyes. everybody stayed calm. We were much more in a specify of confusion than anything else.

After we landed, my buddies as well as I laughed as well as talked about it as we sat in Charleston’s flight terminal drinking beer as well as waiting on a new flight. “Here’s to our very first emergency landing!” we cheered.

Yet as I believed about what had happened, I realized just exactly how helpless we are when that airplane door closes. Your life is in the hands of two people you will never see or meet. Anything can happen, as well as you have no manage over it.

You just have to count on that they understand what theY gør det.

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS JAPAN: guide for First-timers

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS JAPAN: guide for First-timers

It was as though I entered a completely different theme park.

My first visit to the universal Studios Japan was in late 2012. It has been five years considering that then, and man, WHAT AN UPGRADE!

Universal Studios Japan feels brand spanking new!

Well, at least to me. The outstanding Adventures of Spider-Man is now refurbished with 4K3D projections. Back to the Future has been replaced by Despicable Me Minion Mayhem. In one corner rises the Hogwarts Castle, housing the Wizarding world of Harry Potter. and there are limited-time-only attractions that not only speak to the otaku in me but are all exceptional and exciting. That Detective Conan: The escape is cleverly crafted and wonderfully executed!

If you’ve never been to universal Studios Japan before, this guide is for you. If it’s been too long considering that you last went, this is probably for you too because, depend on me, it’s going to feel like the first time. (Not what you’re thinking, pervie.)

So here it is, a travel guide especially dedicated to universal Studios Japan, presented in FAQs (frequently asked questions) format.

I have been to universal Studios Singapore. must I still visit universal Studios Japan? how different is it?

The difference is night and day. universal Studios Singapore has its own crucial rides that are not present here. Likewise, universal Studios Japan has so much to offer that cannot be found at its Singapore counterpart.

For example, the Minion Park and the Wizarding world of Harry Potter are not in Singapore. Their limited-time-only attractions like Sailor Moon, Monster Hunters, Detective Conan, and final fantasy are also special to this park.

When is the best time to visit?

Universal Studios Japan is one of the most checked out attractions in Osaka. any Osaka-bound vacationer traveling with family or kids is a lot of likely to have them in their itinerary. In 2016, it is provided as the 4th a lot of popular theme park in the world. Hence, it could get crowded during weekends and height seasons.

What are the height seasons? According to a lot of online sources:

Golden Week (April 29 – may 5)

Obon festival (August 13–15)

New Year (December 31 – January 5)

If you already have a set schedule, just try to avoid checking out on a weekend. but as early as now, for the sake of your sanity, accept in your heart that you will NOT get to experience everything!

How much is the admission ticket?

Here are the ticket prices (as of 2018):

You can double check the updated rates here.

Are there special tickets? Where can I get those?

Ja! Klook sells so-called 1.5 Day Pass. Basically, this pass will allow you to visit universal Studios Japan at 3pm on Day 1 and then you can still use it for the entire day the following day. This gives you enough time to try a lot more rides and take pleasure in a lot more of the park.

How to get to universal Studios Japan?

We have a separate, a lot more in-depth post just for that.

Read it here: how toget to universal Studios Japan

Is there a way to bypass the long lines?

Yes, it’s called express PASS.

It’s an extra pass (separate from your park ticket) that you can purchase in buy to skip the long lines. There are two types of express Passes, depending on the number of rides you want to use it for.

Express Pass 4, good for 4 rides

Express Pass 7, good for 7 rides

At every crucial attraction, there is a separate lane for express PASS holders, so you’re guaranteed to be prioritized. just show your express PASS to the staff by the entrance.

So for example, if you purchase an express PASS 4, you don’t have to wait in line at up to 4 popular rides. To be clear, you can take pleasure in a lot more than 4 attractions of course, but you don’t need to queue for 4 of them.

Its best for those who want to make the most of their day.

You can also get express Passes from Klook. just follow the links below:

✅ get express PASS 4 HERE

✅ get express PASS 7 HERE

What are the best attractions?

The three a lot of popular attractions are the following:

Harry Potter and the forbidden Journey

Despicable Me Minion Mayhem

The flying Dinosaur

However, you must also enjoy out for universal cool Japan, an event that features limited-time-only attractions. For example, for January-June 2018, you can experience the following extraordinary rides:

Final fantasy XR Ride

Detective Conan: The Escape

Monster Hunters: The Real

Sailormoon

These limited-time-only rides are widely popular so expect looooong lines.

These featured rides change every season!

What if I don’t have an express PASS? Can I still have a great time?

Selvfølgelig! but prepare to wait longer for your turn.

I personally don’t mind waiting if I’m with my friends because we could burn time just talking about anything. but when I was with my nephew, who was a very impatient kid, I regretted not purchasing an express PASS.

Without express Pass, how long do I have to wait in line?

Depends on the attraction and the season. If you’re lucky, 30-40 minutes. but for the very popular ones, prepare to wait for 60-90 minutes, often 120 minutes.

Bring something to entertain yourself while waiting. In my case, my phone normally does the trick. I just publish pics and check my social accounts. and oh, bring a power bank (mobile charger).

How can I maximize my time?

If you don’t have an express PASS, you might find these ideas useful:

Before the trip, research and identify your top 4 attractions. Now, get a map of the park and rearrange your top 4 according to their location. Your #1 attraction must be near #2 and so on.

Come to the park early. The earlier you arrive, the a lot more rides you’ll enjoy. The crowd grows thicker over time so be an early bird.

Once inside, prioritize your top attractions. Harry Potter is the most popular so it’s something to consider for your first pick.

Also, be mindful of certain schedules especially of the events and photo opportunities with certain characters. For example, Detective Conan: The escape only happens twice a day.

Are there lockers inside the park?

Yes, but these are small lockers only.

If you need space to store your big bags, you’ll find coin lockers ideal outside the park. use them before entering the park.

Here are the sizes of the lockers:

Small: 357×453×398
Medium: 357×453×533
Large: 357×453×802
Multiple Time Use: 360×425×300

Are there ATMs inside the park?

Ja. bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ and AEON Bank.

If you have other questions, post them in the comments section below, and we’ll try to answer them and add them to this post. 🙂

SO, I got STABBED IN COLOMBIA

SO, I got STABBED IN COLOMBIA

Posted: 04/02/2019 | April 2nd, 2019

Editor’s Note: I wavered on composing about this for a long time since I didn’t want to put people off on Colombia or perpetuate the myth that danger lurks around every corner. As you can tell from my posts here, here, here, and here, I truly like the country. I mean it’s awesome. (And there will be plenty more blog posts about how great it is.) but I blog about all my experiences – good or bad – and this story is a good lesson on travel safety, the importance of always following local advice, and what occurs when you stop doing so.

“Har du det godt?”

“Her. Sid ned.”

“Do you need some water?”

A growing crowd had gathered around me, all offering help in one form or another.

“No, no, no, I believe I’ll be OK,” I stated waving them off. “I’m just a bit stunned.”

My arm and back throbbed while I tried to regain my composure. “I’m going to be truly sore in the morning,” I thought.

“Come, come, come. We insist,” stated one girl. She led me back onto the walkway where a security guard provided me his chair. Jeg satte mig ned.

“Hvad hedder du? Here’s some water. Is there anyone we can call?”

“I’ll be fine. I’ll be fine,” I kept replying.

My arm throbbed. “Getting punched sucks,” I stated to myself.

Regaining my composure, I slowly took off the jacket I was wearing. I was as well sore for any quick motions anyways. I needed to see how bad the bruises were.

As I did so, gasps arose from the crowd.

My left arm and shoulder were dripping with blood. My shirt was soaked through.

“Shit,” I stated as I realized what had happened. “I believe I just got stabbed.”

***
There’s a perception that Colombia is unsafe, that despite the heyday of the drug wars being over, danger lurks around most corners and you have to be truly careful here.

It’s not a completely unwarranted perception. Petty crime is extremely common. The 52-year civil war killed 220,000 people — although thankfully this number has significantly dropped since the 2016 peace agreement.

While you are unlikely to be blown up, randomly shot, kidnapped, or ransomed by guerrillas, you are extremely likely to get pickpocketed or mugged. There were over 200,000 armed robberies in Colombia last year. While fierce crimes have been on the decline, petty crime and robbery has been on the upswing.

Before I went to Colombia, I’d heard countless stories of petty theft. While there, I heard even more. A friend of mine had been robbed three times, the last time at gunpoint while on his method to meet me for dinner. Locals and expats alike told me the exact same thing: the rumors of petty theft are true, but if you keep your wits about you, follow the rules, and don’t flash your valuables, you’ll be OK.

There’s even a local expression about it: “No dar papaya” (Don’t give papaya). Essentially, it means that you shouldn’t have something “sweet” out in the open (a phone, computer, watch, etc.) that would make you a target. keep your valuables hidden, don’t roam around locations you shouldn’t at night, don’t flash money around, avoid coming out of nightlife areas alone at night, etc. just put: Don’t put yourself in a position where people can take advantage of you.

I heeded such advice. I didn’t wear headphones in public. I didn’t take my phone out unless I was in a group or a restaurant, or completely sure nobody else was around. I took just enough money for the day with me when I left my hostel. I warned buddies about using fancy fashion jewelry or watches when they visited.

But, the longer you are somewhere, the more you get complacent.

When you see locals on their phones in congested areas, tourists toting thousand-dollar cameras, and youngsters using Airpods and Apple Watches, you begin to think, “OK, during the day, it’s not so bad.”

The more nothing occurs to you, the more indifferent you get.

Suddenly, you step out of a cafe with your phone out without even believing about it.

In your hands is papaya.

And somebody wishes to take it.

***
It was near sunset. I was on a busy street in La Candelaria, the main tourist area of Bogotá. The cafe I had been at was closing, so it was time to find somewhere new. I decided to head to a hostel to finish some work and take advantage of happy hour.

I’d been in Bogotá for a few days now, enjoying a city most people compose off. There was a appeal to it. even in the tourist hotspot of La Candelaria, it didn’t feel as gringofied as Medellín. It felt the most authentic of all the big Colombian cities I had visited. I was loving it.

I exited the cafe with my phone out, completing a text message. It had slipped my mind to put it away. It was still light outside, there were crowds around, and lots of security. After nearly six weeks in Colombia, I had grown contented in circumstances like this.

“What’s truly going to happen? I’ll be fine.”

Three steps out of the door, I felt somebody clean up against me. At first, I believed it wassomebody running past me up until I quickly realized that a guy was trying to take my phone out of my hand.

Fight or flight set in — and I fought.

“Get the fuck off me!” I yelled as I wrestled with him, keeping an iron grip on my phone. I tried pushing him away.

“Help, help, help!” I shouted into the air.

I keep in mind distinctly the confused look on his deal with as if he had expected an easy mark. That the phone would slip out of my hand and he’d be gone before anyone could catch him.

Without a word, he started punching my left arm, and I continued to resist.

“Lad mig være! Help, help!”

We tussled in the street.

I kicked, I screamed, I blocked his punches.

The commotion triggered people to run toward us.

Unable to dislodge the phone from my hand, the mugger turned and ran.

***
After people assisted me sit down and the adrenaline used off, I got lightheaded. My ears rang. I had difficulty focusing for a few moments.

Blood was dripping with my soaked shirt.

“Fuck,” I stated looking at my arm and shoulder.

I tried to compose myself.

Having grown up surrounded by physicians and nurses, I ran with a quick “how bad is this” checklist in my mind.

I made a fist. I could feel my fingers. I could move my arm. “OK, I most likely don’t have nerve or muscle damage.”

I could breathe and was not coughing up blood. “Ok, I most likely don’t have a punctured lung.”

I could still walk and feel my toes.

My light-headedness dissipated.

“OK, there’s most likely not as well much major damage,” I thought.

Words I didn’t comprehend were spoken in Spanish. A doctor shown up and assisted clean and put pressure on my wounds. A young lady in the crowd who spoke English took my phone and voice-texted my only friend in Bogotá to let her know the situation.

As an ambulance would take as well long, the police, who numbered about a dozen by now, packed me onto the back of a truck and took me to a hospital, stopping web traffic on the method like I was an honored dignitary.

Using Google equate to communicate, the police inspected me in at the hospital. They took down as much information as they could, showed me a picture of the attacker (yes, that’s him!), and called my friend to update her about where I was.

As I waited to be seen by the doctors, the owner of my hostel showed up. After having taken my address, the cops had phoned up the hostel to let them know what occurred and she had rushed down.

The hospital personnel saw me quickly. (I suspect being a stabbed gringo got me quicker attention.)

We went into one of the examination rooms. My shirt came off, they cleaned my arm and back, and assessed the damage.

I had five wounds: two on my left arm, two on my shoulder, and one on my back, little cuts that broke the skin, with two appearing like they got into the muscle. If the knife had been longer, I would have been in serious trouble: one cut was right on my collar and another especially close to my spine.

When you believe of the term “stabbing,” you believe of a long blade, a single deep cut into the abdomen or back. You picture somebody with a extending knife being rolled into the hospital on a stretcher.

That was not the case for me. I had been, more colloquially correct, knifed.

Badly knifed.

But just knifed.

There was no blade extending from my gut or back. There would be no surgery. No deep lacerations.

The wounds wouldn’t need any more than antibiotics, stitches, and time to heal. En masse tid. (How much time? This occurred at the end of January and it took two months for the bruising to go down.)

I was stitched up, taken for an X-ray to make sure I didn’t have a punctured lung, and needed to sit around for another six hours as they did a follow-up. My friend and hostel owner stayed a bit.

During that time, I booked a flight home. While my wounds weren’t serious and I could have stayed in Bogotá, I didn’t want to danger it. The hospital refused to give me antibiotics and, being a bit suspicious of their stitching job, I wished to get checked out back home while everything was still fresh. When I was leaving the hospital, I even had to ask them to cover my wounds. They were going to leave them exposed.

It’s better to be risk-free than sorry.

***
Looking back, would I have done anything differently?

It’s easy to say, “Why didn’t you just give him your phone?”

But it’s not as if he led with a weapon. had he done so, I obviously would have surrendered the phone. This kid (and it turned out he was just a kid of about 17) just tried to grab it from my hand, and anyone’s natural instinct would be to pull back.

If somebody stole your purse, took your computer while you were utilizing it, or tried to grab your watch, your initial, primal reaction wouldn’t be, “Oh well!” It would be, “Hey, give me back my stuff!”

And if that stuff were still connected to your hand, you’d pull back, shout for help, and hope the mugger would go away. especially when it’s still daytime and there are crowds around. You can’t always assume a mugger has a weapon.

Based on the information I had at the time, I don’t believe I would have done anything differently. Nature just set in.

Things could have been a lot worse: The knife could have been longer. He could have had a gun. I could have turned the wrong way, and that little blade could have hit a major artery or my neck. The knife was so little that I didn’t even feel it during the attack. A longer blade might have triggered me to recoil more and drop my phone. Jeg ved ikke. If he had been a better mugger, he would have kept running forward and I wouldn’t have been able to catch up as the forward motion made the phone leave my hand.

The permutations are endless.

This was also just a matter of being unlucky. A wrong time and wrong place situation. This could have occurred to me anywhere. You can be in the wrong place and the wrong time in a million locations and in a million situations.

Life is risk. You’re not in manage of what occurs to you the second you walk out the door. You believe you are. You believe you have a handle on the circumstance — but then you walk out of a café and get knifed. You get in a car that accidents or a helicopter that goes down, eat food that hospitalizes you, or, despite your finest health efforts, drop dead from a heart attack.

Anything can happen to you at any time.

We make plans as if we are in control.

But we’re not in manage of anything.

All we can do is manage our reaction and responses.

I truly like Bogotá. I truly like Colombia. The food was tasty and the scenery breathtaking. Throughout my go to there, people were inquisitive, friendly, and happy.

And when this happened, I marveled at all the people who assisted me, who stayed with me up until the police came, the many police officers who assisted me in numerous ways, the physicians who went to to me, the hostel owner who ended up being my translator, and my friend who drove an hour to be with me.

Everyone apologized. everyone understood this was what Colombia is understood for. They wished to let me know this was not Colombia. I believe they felt worse about the attack than I did.

But this experience reminded me of why you can’t get complacent. I provided papaya. I shouldn’t have had my phone out. When I left the cafe, I should have put it away. It didn’t matter the time of day. That’s the rule in Colombia. keep your valuables hidden. especially in Bogota, which does have a higher rate of petty crime than elsewhere in the country. I didn’t follow the advice.

And I got unlucky because of it. I’d been having my phone out as well often and, with each non-incident, I grew more and more relaxed. I kept dropping my guard down more.

What occurred was unlucky but it didn’t need to happen if I had complied with the rules.

This is why people always warned me to be careful.

Because you never know. You’re fine up until you aren’t.

That said, you’re still unlikely to have a problem. All those incidences I talked about? All involved people breaking the ironclad “No Dar Papaya” rule and either having something valuable our or walking alone late at night in areas they shouldn’t have. Don’t break the rule! This could have occurred to me anywhere in the world where I didn’t follow the security rules you’re supposed to that help you minimize risk.

But, also know, if you do get into trouble, Colombians will help you out. From my hostel owner to the cops to the people who sat with me when it occurred to the random guy in the hospital who provided me chocolate, it turns out, you can always depend upon the generosity of strangers. They made a harrowing experience a lot easier to deal with.

I’m not going to let this freak incident change my view of such an fantastic country. I’d go back to Colombia the exact same method I’d get in a car after a car accident. In fact, I was terribly upset to leave. I was having an fantastic time

PUNTA BULATA resort in Cauayan, Negros Occidental (Splurge Option)

PUNTA BULATA resort in Cauayan, Negros Occidental (Splurge Option)

hidden 156 kilometers south of Bacolod City, Punta Bulata White beach resort and day spa is a tropical paradise in Cauayan, Negros Occidental. Cauayan is the municipality just before Sipalay City, which is also very well-known for white beaches. It’s 4 hours away from the city center of Bacolod. You might be asking, “Why do I have to travel 4 hours to go to this resort? Er det det værd?” Well, let this post give you an answer.

Punta Bulata prides itself on its stretch of creamy white sand, clear shallow water, a thriving diverse marine life and a amazing view of Sulu Sea. The place also boasts of an infinity pool and spa. The staff is also very friendly and helpful, a reflection of the people of Negros in general.

When we arrived at the resort after 4 hours of travel, we were welcomed by the resort manager who had been waiting for us at the entrance to the place. The manager kept on apologizing for the bumpy ride from the national highway to their location. (We rode a motorcycle to get here and it was a tough ride to say the least.) We kept on telling him that it was ok and that we got plenty of alerting from their staff whom we had been corresponding with.

We were handed wet towels as soon as we approached the reception desk. They also served welcome drinks! After settling our payment, we were given the crucial to our cottage.

Room and Rates

A staff member named Arvee led us to our cottage by the beach. We booked the beach family Suite which costs P2400 per night. including the 10% tax, the total cost was P2640. It was a very spacious hut with a double bed and a single bed — best for traveling groups of three like us. That indicates that each of us paid P880.

The suite had the rustic feel considering that it was normally made of wood. It was really, really big. It had its own spacious restroom! like really spacious. It also had a veranda and an area, which we didn’t know what for. LOL. We ended up using that room to dry our wet clothes and snorkel. The whole cottage was also screened to secure its occupants from mosquitoes.

Danjugan Island Marine Reserve Day Tour

Punta Bulata also uses its guests day excursion to Danjugan Island Marine Reserve which is just a few minutes away. Danjugan Island is probably one of the most stunning and a lot of biologically rich islands I’ve been to. I have so much to say about this place that it should have a separate entry.

Restaurant

After our Danjugan Island trip, we indulged in the dishes used by Punta Bulata Restaurant. quite honestly, there’s nothing exceptional about the food. They were a bit expensive, too. but it seemed like we didn’t have a choice. It was the only place we could get food from in the area. Hehe.

Punta Bulata Restaurant
Good food, but nothing great. amazing staff, though.
After dinner, we spent a lot more than enough hours just swimming at the pool. At around 11pm, we made a decision to call it a night as we would be leaving early in the morning the next day.

At opleve påske i Guatemala – uden nogen bunny i syne

At opleve påske i Guatemala – uden nogen bunny i syne

HOW TO travel and work around THE world WITH WWOOF

HOW TO travel and work around THE world WITH WWOOF

Last Updated: 3/20/21 | March 20th, 2021

WWOOF stands for “Worldwide opportunities on organic Farms” and WWOOFing around the world is an incredibly popular way to travel long-term on a budget. In exchange for working on an organic farm, travelers get free room and board — allowing them to extend their travels without breaking the bank.

Since I’ve never WWOOFed, I turned to frequent WWOOFer and freelance writer Sophie McGovern to tell us all about it.

A storm was brewing in northern Italy, moody clouds rolling over the valley. inside a farmhouse, my friend and I were dusting shelves of antique books and ornaments. Not something we expected to be doing on our WWOOF stay, but neither had we expected to find a papier-mâché chicken suit in our bedroom.

When it comes to WWOOFing, you just have to roll with it.

Our host, Silvia, was a tough, middle-aged woman who ran a small-holding complete with a vegetable garden, fruit orchard, goats, and chickens. Her English was basic, but she particularly liked to use the term “strong woman” whenever mothers, independent women, and high-achieving ladies in general were mentioned.

As we dusted, lightning illuminated the valley. Silvia was in the kitchen preparing a dinner of goat meat, potatoes, and salad, all organic produce from the farm. We had taken no part in sacrificing the goat to the gods of gastronomy, but we had harvested the potatoes and salad that morning, which made them taste especially good.

The builders who were renovating the barn next door joined us for dinner along with the third volunteer on the farm. Italian conversation flowed, accompanied by a generous helping of laughter. My friend and I understood little (our vocabulary extended only to soft fruits, garden equipment, and motivational lady talk), but hand gestures and facial expressions sufficed. The other volunteer, an American girl who was WWOOFing primarily to improve her Italian, was soaking up the organic language lesson.

Red wine and rustic bread accompanied the meal, both made at nearby farms and exchanged for Silvia’s homemade goat’s cheese. Out there, produce was currency. We had been introduced to this and many other principles of sustainable living during our stay. never again would I underestimate the value of a good wheel of cheese.

At the end of the night, Silvia informed us of the next day’s tasks: weeding the asparagus beds, picking fruit, and making hay in the afternoon, should the sun be shining.

Our inexperience in all things farm-related had not been a problem since we arrived. There had been a few crossed wires, like when I threw leftovers into the trash instead of adding them to the compost and got told off, but on the whole we found that if you’re willing to learn and don’t have an aversion to dirt, bugs, or early mornings, you’ll get by just fine.

What is WWOOFing

WWOOF is a service that matches people looking for work on farms with farmers who are looking for labor. It’s more a loose affiliation of like-minded groups using the same name than one large international organization.

In order to become a WWOOFer, you need to sign up for the national organization in the country you want. There is no international WWOOF membership, so you’ll have to buy a membership from each WWOOFing country’s organization (WWOOF is made up of almost a hundred organizations). annual membership usually costs around $30-40 USD per country per person (there is also a joint membership for couples that offers a slight discount). You don’t need any previous experience in farming to do this, just a desire to work.

As you can imagine, WWOOFing opens endless opportunities on an extended-travel trip. If you make your way around the world visiting a selection of the 130 countries and the 12,000 hosts that participate in WWOOF, you can save tens of thousands of dollars over the course of a year.

You can also learn skills, absorb languages, and make friends.

Over our two-month stay, we spent zero on food and accommodation in a region of Italy where it otherwise costs backpackers at least 20 EUR a night for a hostel and 15 EUR a day for food.

Over our two-month stay, that meant a total savings of at least 2,000 EUR!

How to join WWOOF

We had joined WWOOF Italia from a computer in our English dorm room but the process works the same no matter the country you want:

Visit the WWOOF website

Choose destination country of choice. here is the list of participating countries.

Fill out their membership application and pay the fee

Start searching for opportunities!

You have to be 18 years of age or older to join most WWOOF destinations, but different rules apply to different countries.

Germany, the UK, Portugal, and Italy take WWOOFers under 18 but you may need a letter of consent from your parent or legal guardian. WWOOF Switzerland has a minimum age of 16 while you have to be 20 years old to WWOOF in Turkey.

Kort efter at have deltaget i WWOOF Italia, fik vi sendt en liste over over hundrede gårde.

I alt kostede rejsen mindre end 50 EUR.

Sådan overvindes problemer (F.A.Q.)

That thing Called Tadhana

This box office hit that was initially released as an entry for Cinema One Originals film Festival. but when it was distributed by star Cinema as their Valentine offering, it became a cultural phenomenon, becoming the top-grossing independent film in history at the time. It also sent “hugot lines” to our collective consciousness and catapulted director Antoinette Jadaone to mainstream success.

Its theme song, Whitney Houston’s “Where do broken hearts go?”, encapsulates the story as Mace and Anthony, portrayed by Angelica Panganiban and JM de Guzman, go from Rome to Manila to Baguio and finally, Sagada on a whim. one of the most renowned scenes is when they wait for the sunrise at Mt. Kiltepan and then yell their hearts out to the spectacular view of the sea of clouds.

Don’t give Up On Us

Not a lot of people know this, but Don’t give Up on us is one of Antoinette Jadaone’s inspirations for That thing Called Tadhana. Directed by Bb. Joyce Bernal, it also showcases the charm of the Cordillera region as the love story unfolds. It stars Judy Ann Santos as Abby, a city girl who chooses to go to Baguio to find her best pal after running away before her wedding. In her quest, she meets Vins, played by Piolo Pascual, whom she convinced to help her. Their journey takes them to some marvelous spots in Baguio, Banaue, and Sagada.

Kailangan Kita

This Claudine Barretto and Aga Muhlach classic was shot in the Bicol region. Kailangan Kita is a love story between a US-based chef who returns to the Philippines to organize his wedding but finds himself slowly but certainly falling for her fiance’s sister.

The story alone is quite compelling, but another element that makes this film so stunning to view is how it perfectly captures the natural scenery of Albay, with the Mayon Volcano getting its charm shots every now and then. It also highlights the region’s rich and dynamic cuisine, a terrific parallel to the complex and spicy romance that blossoms beautifully in the film.

You’re My Boss

Also helmed by Antoinette Jadaone, You’re My boss is a romantic comedy starring Coco Martin and Toni Gonzaga revolves around a no-nonsense airline company executive who is prepared to do everything to keep her job even if it implies forcing her humble assistant to pretend as the boss.

It was released on the Black Saturday of 2015, a visual treat for the summer as it films the captivating wonders of the province of Batanes, where the love story reaches its peak. The natural charm of its landscapes gives a refreshing, stark contrast to the typical office setting, where the big fraction of the film was set.

Siargao

Siargao was the Metro Manila film festival entry in 2017 that bagged the most awards from the festival that year. It stars Erich Gonzales as a vlogger who wants to find herself after a break-up and Jericho Rosales as a musician who went back to his hometown to run away from the troubles he’s in.

The film gives us a peek of what life is like in Siargao from surfing on Cloud 9, arts and music to the nightlife on the island.

Mr. & Mrs. Cruz

Starring the unlikely but effective pair of Ryza Cenon and JC Santos, this film is about Raffy and Gela who coincidentally share the same surname and met while on a getaway to get away from their current life problems. Their chosen place to run away to? Palawan, of course.

You will see the charm of Puerto Princesa and El Nido as the characters go on a trip of this breathtaking destination.

Camp Sawi

A lot of people go some place else when they’re broken hearted, but if there’s a particular place where you could mend your broken heart, wouldn’t you want to go there instead? This is what Camp Sawi is, a summer camp of some sort especially built for those with troubled hearts. The camp was set in Santa Fe in Bantayan IslanD, en spektakulær ø i Cebu.

Elsker mig igen (Land Down Under)
