HOW TO enjoy SONGKRAN (THAI new YEAR)

HOW TO enjoy SONGKRAN (THAI new YEAR)

Last Updated: 02/04/20 | February 4th, 2020

Songkran is a three-day water fight that celebrates the Thai new Year. It occurs between April 13th to 15th (which coincidentally is the hottest month of the year). Songkran is one of the popular festivals not only in Thailand, but in the world, marking the beginning of a new solar year and is a time of renewal and rebirth.

The history of Songkran

The word Songkran is from the Sanskrit language and means the passage of the sun from one sign of the Zodiac to another. The date was originally set by astrological calculations, but it is now fixed on 13 April. The country closes down for the holiday, focusing entirely on the festival and the accompanying holiday rituals.

Over the years, Songkran has become a enormous tourist draw. Travelers and backpackers alike flock to the country to take part, with tens of thousands of people taking to the streets to ring in the new year by dumping buckets of cold water on each other.

Bangkok sees the largest of Songkran parties. The busiest streets are Silom road, Khao San road, and RCA. The holiday is meant to wash away the old year and bring in the new year. It’s amazing to see little kids, seniors, and even police get involved.

In fact, my favorite moment involves the police: a cop and I got into a water fight and I sprayed his partner who was not wet. He looked at me like I was about to get arrested. I was the stupid foreigner who took it too far. He walked over to me, took my squirt gun, stepped back and his parter and him teamed up on me. we all had a good laugh!

It’s a very high spirited holiday and everyone is just out to have a terrific time.

The only way to really understand the craziness that is Songkran is to see it like in person so here’s my video of the event to give you an idea:

Tips for attending Songkran

To help you make the most out of this epic waterfight, here are some tips:

Chiang Mai and Bangkok have the biggest celebrations but you’ll find little celebrations all over the country.

In Bangkok, Khao San road and Silom hold the two biggest celebrations.

Plan to be wet — all the time. even if you have a backpack or bag, people will still spray you with water. There’s no escape unless you are inside.

The only way to avoid being wet is to have a camera or cigarette. If people see you with one, they won’t spray you with water.

Just have fun. There’s no malice involved here so if you get wet and you didn’t want to, just go with it. It’s the holiday and you just have to accept it. They even pour water on people driving motorcycles.

One of the most fun things to do is get in a tuk-tuk or truck and ride around the city spraying people with water. You get into some of the most amazing water fights and meet a lot of people. I highly recommend this during at least one day.

Wear goggles. people are going to be shoot or throwing water at you all day long. You never know when the next attack will come, so get some goggles to protect your eyes. It will save you from squinting all day long!

Don’t pay for water. 99% of locals will offer buckets of water for you to refill your water gun with for free, but there are a few people out there who will try to charge you for a refill. just ignore them until you find someone sharing their water for free. You won’t have to go far.

Road deaths double during Songkran, with up to 50 people dying in automobile accidents each day (the majority of which are motorcycle accidents). stay safe and keep off the bike — whether it’s yours or someone else’s!

Attending Songkran: Logistics

With so many people taking part in this festival, accommodation sells out quickly. If you’re planning to attend Songkran, make sure you book your hostel early.

Also, keep in mind that Songkran is a public holiday. That means banks and government services will be closed. If you need consular or financial services, get them out of the way before the holiday. as of 2018, the government extended the holiday period to 5 days (to allow people time to go home and check out family) so many services are closed even longer now. Prepare accordingly.

If you want to enjoy the holiday in Bangkok, public transportation is both convenient and cheap. Non-airconditioned buses cost 10 THB while buses with AC cost 15 THB. These can take you anywhere in the city. The SkyTrain and Metro cost 15-50 THB per trip and you can purchase a day pass for 120 THB.

Taxis are a more expensive option and cost around 70-100 THB (one from the airport to Khao San road will set you back 300-500 THB). just make sure they use the meter. If they don’t just get out and find another taxi. Alternatively, there’s a Suvarnabhumi airport Rail link express that’s a 15-minute non-stop journey between the city and the airport that costs 150 THB per trip.

***
Songkran takes place all over the country and, if you are in Thailand during this time, you will experience it. You can’t miss it. It’s like the one thing that brings everyone together here. Prepare to get wet. Prepare to have to fun! It’s one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had (and I’ve done it three times). The event is just pure joy. everyone is here to have fun. There’s no malice involved.
Enjoy Songkran!

I let out a deep, deep sigh of relief as soon as the plane landed at Subarnabhumi Airport. It wasn’t since there had been trouble on the flight or anything like it. I was just stoked that I lastly reached Bangkok, after a long tug-o-war with my poultry change ego.

I quit my full-time task to backpack across Southeast Asia. however the trip  became a reality eight months after my last day at work. eight months, people. eight months. quite a long time. What happened in between? Chickening out as well as delaying tactics masked as preparation. It would be my very first time to travel alone, as well as to do it in a foreign country intimidated me a lot. even on my last night in Manila, there was a part of me that wanted to back out.

But it happened. Late, yes, however it did.

And there’s no much better place to have my baptism of fire than in Asia’s City of Smiles — Bangkok.

Wat Arun
Bangkok: Asia’s Backpacking Capital

The tired backpacking route across the Southeast Oriental peninsula is known in the travel world as the Banana Pancake Trail, so called for the many stalls selling banana pancakes that are widely sold in the cities along the trail. This route is popular for a lots things, however its “exotic” cultures as well as low expense of living top the list. complying with it means passing through Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, as well as Cambodia. as well as this trail starts as well as ends in Bangkok, the epicenter of backpacking in the region.

The funding of Thailand, Bangkok is the commercial, economic, as well as political center of the country. It is a wild, extremely developed third-world metropolis however is still very much in touch with its past. Bangkok’s history as the Thai funding began in 1782, when King Rama I had the people move south complying with the autumn of Ayutthaya in 1767. Bangkok lies at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River, seen as a very strategic military place back then. It was likewise King Rama I who ordered the building of the Grand palace complex as well as many other temples, which remain standing until today.

Their language can be quite daunting to non-native speakers, particularly its lengthy words as well as tongue-twisting pronunciations, however as with every other language, it only intimidates in the beginning. English isn’t widely spoken, however what the locals lack in English fluency, they make up for with their friendly mindset toward tourists.

Getting around Bangkok

Although it is not as sweat-free as in Hong Kong or Singapore, commuting in Bangkok is quite easy. Vehicular traffic can get crazy during rush hour, however it is nothing compared to what we are forced to endure in Manila. If you’re used to the giant vehicle parking great deal that runs across Manila called EDSA, you’ll be fine in Bangkok (or any type of other Southeast Oriental city for that matter).

Getting around via public transportation means using one or more of these four modes:

Train (BTS Skytrain/MRT). Bangkok’s train system is quick as well as reliable, as well as will take you to many attractions throughout the city. I discovered myself taking the train most of the time during my stay since there was a train station very near my hotel. Also, even during the busiest hours, I never experienced getting almost squished to death. The BTS fare ranges from 15 to 52 baht. as well as you will need 5 or 10 baht coins to get in. most stations have a counter than can break your big bills as well as a ticket machine that accepts bills.

Båd. The two boat services operating in Bangkok are the Chao Phraya reveal Boat, which plies up as well as down the Chao Phraya River as well as is popular among tourists for it stops at many of the city’s most popular landmarks; as well as the Saen Saep reveal Boat, used mostly by locals who commute to work. The Chao Phraya boat is the best option for you if you mean to check out the Grand palace complex (at Tha Chang) as well as Wat Pho (at Tha Tien), as well as the Siriraj medical museum (Wang Lang Station) within one dag!

Onboard a Chao Phraya ferry
Taxa. always my last option. If my destination is too far from a train or boat station, I would just hail a cab. A ride costs more than in Manila however nowhere near the rates in Hong Kong or Singapore. The flagdown is 35 baht as well as the typical ride within the city is probably around 100.

You might encounter cab drivers who take advantage of tourists by not using the meter as well as then overcharging. If the driver refuses to use the meter, just get off the vehicle. understand that all cabs in Bangkok must use the meter. many of these drivers wait for tourist passengers at the popular attractions like temples as well as Khao San Road. I always walked far from them as well as just hail a moving cab.

Tuktuk. I didn’t even bother. They are very expensive, even more costly than cabs, as well as I had tried it in Siem Reap anyway. If you really want to try for the heck of it, just agree on the price first.

Where to Stay

Check rates as well as Availability Here
For budget plan travelers, Khao San road as well as Silom road offer the cheapest accommodations. Khao San is the backpacking center as well as has a very festive vibe with great deals of street food, restaurants, as well as bars. Its popularity among travelers likewise triggered the mushrooming of scams here. There is no train station around.

Silom is the business as well as monetary district of Bangkok. There are malls, shops, as well as night markets in its inner alleys. The famous (or infamous, depending on exactly how you look at it as well as what you mean to do, haha) Pat Pong is likewise located around the corner. the best part is that it has its own train station that links it to rest of the city.

I was able to try two budget plan hotels in Bangkok. The pics below lead you to short reviews of these hotels.

Nantra Silom

Where to Eat

In the streets, of course! Bangkok is widely known for its inexpensive as well as tasty kerbside cuisine. A stay in the city is never total without sitting at a sidewalk table as well as digging in to a plateful of Pad Thai or Pork Rice. It’s a dining experience that you shouldn’t miss. An order usually costs THB 40-60. right here are some dishes you cannot leave the city without trying!

Tom Yum

Green Curry

Pad Thai

Pork Rice

Grilled poultry as well as Innards

Mango Sticky Rice

Steder at besøge

Temples as well as shrines top the listing of the popular tourist attractions in the city center. You don’t need to join a tour since many of these key places are quickly accessible from the Chao Phraya River. Here’s a quick do-it-yourself walking tour that will take you to the most popular sites in Bangkok: 6 popular Attractions in Bangkok, A walking Tour

Wat Pho

Wat Arun

Siriraj Forensic Museum

Grand Palace

Khao San Road

Bangkok Chinatown

And there are even more impressive structures if you go on a day tour or stay overnight in neighboring Ayutthaya.

Here are some more fascinating destinations:

Goddess Tuptim Penis Shrine

Flydende marked

Siam Square

Platinum fashion Mall

Pat Pong/Silom

My preferred moment in Bangkok was inside the Siriraj Forensic Museum, where I walked through chilling galleries of gore as well as violence. It was a little out of the way, however if you’re into CSI or final Destination, this is your wonderland right here.

Many of my pals have done the Bangkok-Siem Reap itinerary. understand that it entails spending a day on the road so make sure your time allows it.

Vigtige tip

The twin beaches of Nacpan and Calitang: El Nido, Palawan

We were in the mood to bask in the sun that morning. El Nido wasn’t.

It was sweet and sunny when we left our hotel. despite the heavy rain the night before, we kept our optimism on the way to our destination. As I sat inside the van, I thought, “This is going to be a terrific day!”

All of a sudden, the vehicle stopped. It was bogged. The continuous raining the past days had turned the dirt road into chocolate marshmallows and now swallowed the tires of our van. We hopped out, removed our slippers, and walked several hundred meters barefoot to the beach. Still, nothing was going to spoil the day!

It’s a dirty business crossing this road.
The locals, even children, see the bright side!
“Keep calm and be positive,” I said to myself while I straddled the chocolate-flavored road. “As long as it doesn’t rain, this is going to be a terrific day!”

And just like that. rain poured. Hårdt.

Swimming in the rain at Nacpan Beach

We scrambled to put all our valuables and clothes inside a plastic bag as the villains hovering above us pissed rivers. but once done, we welcomed the downpour as a long lost friend, the kind you want to kick in the nuts and then hug after. It had been years since I last enjoyed walking in the rain, and it was a good day to relive some childhood memories or reenact low-cost videoke clips. like little kids who had seen the ocean for the first time, we dashed to the water and embraced the waves, our mischievous playmates for the day. We greeted adventures and misadventures with open arms. (Cue: Journey)

Where’s storm when you need her?

The pristine charm of Nacpan beach shone through the bleak atmosphere. Under normal, sunny circumstances, the sand is much whiter and the waves less powerful. Nacpan beach forms one side of an almost triangular cape that sticks into the West Philippine Sea. It’s a long, long strip of pearly white sand that dips gently into the shoreline, fenced by a troupe of towering coconut trees that sway softly with the wind.

Except this time, they weren’t swaying with it; they were restlessly fighting it. As were we. We didn’t realize we had been wrestling the sea for hours. The waves turned from strong to violent, and the raindrops began to stab our backs. It was the signal we needed to retreat to a place with a roof. Frokost tid!

Lunch at Kayla’s Cucina

Before we headed for the beach that morning, we ordered meals from a small canteen along the way. Hence, the food was ready to be served when we arrived for lunch break. options are limited, but the popular dishes were grilled chicken and fish, vegetable salad, and shrimps. Lutong bahay, oh how I missed you! They tasted good. Typisk. but good.

My pals and the other tourists we met during this trip

Hiking for a good View

An hour and 20 pounds later, I found myself galloping back to the beach. Well, not really. I found myself unable to move in utter fullness and sloth, but then my pals dragged me back to the beach. The skies were much friendlier now. Brenna led the group to a grass-covered hill at the end of Nacpan where a steep overused trail was waiting for us. After a short climb, the top of the hill surprised us with wig-snatching winds and a glorious 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape!

Nacpan-Calitang twin beaches when it’s bright and sunny. photo shot by Brenna Bustamante on a separate trip.
The hill is where the beaches of Nacpan and Calitang meet. While Nacpan appeared to be almost endless, Calitang is much shorter. One end cradles a fishing village, and the other a row of multi-colored boats. The two beaches merge in a narrow powdery sandbar that snakes into a verdant hill that lies adjacent to it. The other side of the hill is rocky and more dangerous, as it faces the open sea.

The orgasmic vista made me grab my camera and take countless shots, but then I realized I had left it at the canteen. Boo! With a heavy heart and even heavier feet, I went down, walked back to retrieve my cam, and crawled back up to the hilltop to finally take photos. Alas, the sun was shy and hiding again! Well-played, sun. Godt spillet.

Nacpan Calitang under coudy skies
The hill on the southern tip of the cape
But guess what, I was serious when I said nothing could spoil that day. Not even the rain.

And it rained again.

You’ve got to be kidding me!

How to get to Nacpan-Calitang twin Beaches: located in Barangay Bucana north of El Nido town proper, the twin beaches are 45 minutes away by van, even longer by tricycle. It is not included in the usual island-hopping tours, but most travel agencies and tour operators offer trips to this stunner.

After so numerous months of staying at home, numerous of us are thrilled to finally get out and travel. While different types of community quarantine remain in effect throughout the country, the government recently lifted certain travel bans and unwinded numerous of the previous restrictions. Some destinations, from theme parks like Enchanted Kingdom to islands like Boracay, have welcomed back tourists.

If you really need to travel, one of the things you have to consider is booking accommodations in advance. because the risk of the pandemic is still out there, it’s essential to choose a hotel that follows meticulous safety and health standards. For those on a tight budget, hostels and dorms may not be the best idea. but it’s easy to find private rooms in budget hotels that are easy on the pockets online.

Many of these you can find on RedDoorz, the largest online hotel management and booking platform in Southeast Asia. aside from strictly following government policies, RedDoorz also launched an industry-wide cleanliness and sanitation program called HygienePass. This will help travelers to easily identify ‘safe’ hotels that execute and maintain health and sanitation measures.

There are currently much more than 100 hotels that are HygienePass certified that you can find on the RedDoorz app. In this article, we’re noting 10 of the RedDoorz hotels that are HygienePass certified in areas just outside Metro Manila for those of you who are planning a quick getaway.

Just a reminder: book in advance! It’s safer because it minimizes contact. Reserving a room is also much more convenient because hotels may not be accepting guests to their full capacity.

For extra savings, here’s a special discount code that you can use. It only works on the RedDoorz mobile app, so download it here: iOs link, Android link.

The very first as well as the most valuable lesson we learnt during our travels is the importance of sluggish travelling. particularly if you are planning to do some work along way.

We totally fooled ourselves into believing we might quickly travel around, as well as work. as well as really, exactly how difficult could it be to compose a publish after exploring?

Believe us, after riding a motorbike all the time or checking out 17 temples within 3 days, all you will want to do is put your feet up as well as have a beer. as well as that’s precisely what we did!

It wasn’t up until 3 months into travelling that we found exactly how fantastic it really is to travel slowly. After our 2-day boat trip in Laos, we decided to anchor in Luang Prabang for at least one week as well as stop moving.

Only then did we realise that we requirement to do this, otherwise we will never catch up with composing content, let alone starting building a blog.

Since then, while travelling in Vietnam we made a mindful decision to stop in lovely Hoi An for 1.5 months, as well as we spent our last two months in SE Asia living in Bangkok. To develop our blog further, we are now planning to stop in Malta for the next few months.

While it’s fun to jump from location to location as well as experience the travel rush in a short area of time, we now appreciate exactly how fantastic it is to travel slower as well as discover a bit bit more about a place, the people as well as culture.

A piece of advice we can provide to anyone wanting to travel as well as blog is to select the location carefully. Make sure there is speedy wifi in the flat/house as well as lots of locations to pop out for food. There’s nothing more frustrating than having to travel as well far to buy some food if you are in midst of motivation as well as the fridge is empty.

Travel Complacency. Undgå!

Travel complacency is a dangerous business. We experienced it very first hand at the Cambodian/Thailand border as well as it wasn’t fun being stuck in between two borders. This was the time when we were happily chatting away about our upcoming two months in Bangkok as well as exactly how much we’ve missed the city, when Kristina was rejected entry to Thailand.

We just ended up being as well contented about the rules as well as didn’t inspect the regulations before making our method to the border.

While Charlie, as a British citizen, was quickly stamped into Thailand, Kristina, a Lithuanian citizen, was unceremoniously pulled to one side for further investigation. Not only do Lithuanian nationals requirement proof of a departure flight when crossing the border overland, however they likewise have to pay $30 for a 15-day visa on arrival.

We were lucky the policeman was kind as well as provided us a couple of options to kind ourselves out. We do not desire it on anyone to be stuck in no man’s land trying to book a return ticket to ‘anywhere’ as well as then trying to print it out just to get into the country. Finally, 5 hours later, disheartened as well as exhausted we were granted entry.

Make sure to inspect as well as double-check the rules. Even if you’ve ‘been there as well as done that’, things change, rules modifications as well as locations change. There won’t be anyone else to blame however yourself!

There’s a useful tip that came out of all this mess: if you ever requirement to cross at the Krong Poipet/Aranyaprathet border in the Thailand direction then go in the afternoon where there is little-to-no waiting. as well as if you ever get pulled aside, stay cool, keep calm as well as try to believe clearly no matter exactly how frightening the circumstance may seem.

Stay Flexible

If we have learnt anything during our travels, it is to be flexible. Sometimes, no matter exactly how much you plan, things don’t always work out. We made plans as well as had to modification them many times during those 8 months on the road, sometimes because of ridiculous things like weather.

It was reaching +40° Celsius when we were checking out Vientiane, the funding of Laos. We desired terribly to see the 4 Thousand Islands to the south of Laos, however the warm was sweltering as well as most of our days were spent inside, hiding from the sun.

PARIS ON A BUDGET: travel guide & itinerary

PARIS ON A BUDGET: travel guide & itinerary

Years ago, when major news websites published articles claiming that one can enjoy Paris for less than P60,000, I took it with a grain of salt. but I’ve done it myself, and I can tell you that it is possible. It can be done.

In pop culture, Paris is heavily romanticized as one incredibly stunning city. In reality, it is exactly that. endnu bedre.

On my first day in Paris, the first thing I did was go up to the open-air observatory of tour Montparnasse to have what many regard as the best view of the city. I remember that moment after emerging from the elevator: I turned right and was right away greeted by the ever-so-captivating Eiffel Tower. It was the first of the many times the hair at the back of my neck rose for all the good reasons.

Each of my Paris trips is a realization of a life-long dream. growing up, I was a fan of French Cinema. At film school, I worshipped Francois Truffaut. I adore French food. I even learned the French language in college. It was as though life had been preparing me for my week-long affairs with this city.

UNDERSTANDING PARIS

Paris is the political, economic, and cultural capital of France. It has a long history as a settlement, which dates back to 250 BC when a Celtic sub-tribe inhabited the island in the middle of the River Seine called Ile de la Cite. The name of that tribe? Parisii. Or at least, that’s what the Romans called them.

The Romans, led by Titus Labienus, conquered them in 52 BC and set up a garrison town named Lutetia. When the Roman empire crumbled, it fell under the rule of Clovis I, the King of the Franks. since then, this little garrison town at the bank of the river has grown and flourished into what we call now “Paris,” an important city that has played vital role in the history and politics of Europe, has nurtured many terrific minds over centuries, and has become a champion for democracy and freedom. much of the city is inscribed as a UNESCO world Heritage Site. The Parisians’ sophisticated taste and state of mind have also made it the world’s fashion capital and a center for many forms of art.

Today, Paris is divided into 20 districts called “arrondissements.” It is important to have at least a basic understanding of it because it will help you make decisions on building your itinerary or choosing accommodations. We’ll discuss this in detail in the WHERE TO stay section.

Aside from the arrondissements, another way of slicing the Paris pie is using the metro/RER zones. central Paris is Zones 1-3 and the farther you go from the center, the higher the zone number. Versailles is in zone 4. CDG airport is in zone 5. These zones matter when purchasing metro passes. See the how TO get around section below.

THINGS TO PREPARE before YOUR TRIP

Here are some other things you might need:

Schengen Visa. If you’re holding a Philippine passport, here’s how to get one successfully.

Paris Metro Map App. You’ll see a lot of subway maps around but nothing is more efficient than an app. I personally prefer this app because it’s FREE, has a built in map, and has route recommendations. It can discover station nearest you. All you need to do is enter the name of your destination and it will suggest 2 routes: the simplest route (with the fewest train changes), and the fastest route. If you don’t know the name of the station, you can enter the name of the tourist attraction (Eiffel Tower, The Louvre, etc.) and it will display the metro station closest to it.

A well-planned itinerary. the worst thing that can happen is spending most of your time on the train because of poor planning. Make sure you check out the attractions close to each other on the same day.

A passport-size photo, if you’re going to purchase a NAVIGO Découverte card, which will allow you unlimited metro and RER train rides for a whole week. more about that below.

An acceptance that you can’t see and do it all. Paris has a lot to offer. EN MASSE. You can’t possibly see it all in a week or two. Don’t overload your itinerary and end up seeing so little of everything. Relax, take your time, and enjoy.

WHERE TO stay IN PARIS

Today, Paris is divided into 20 districts called “arrondissements.” know that the center of Paris is called the 1st Arrondissement, and the other districts surrounding it are numbered in a clockwise spiral. This means that 1st arrondissement is surrounded by the 2nd to the 8th, which are surrounded by the 9th to 20th. here are the arrondissements that you should be familiar with.

The 1st to 9th Arrondissements are where most tourist attractions are located. Upscale hotels can also be found here.

The 10th to 20th Arrondissements are where you’ll find most major train terminals and cheaper accommodations. There are also some places of interest here that are worth a visit.

Artwork by Jpatokal (WikiTravel). kreative fællesheder
Don’t get too overwhelmed. You don’t need to memorize this. but this will help you choose where to stay or plan where to go. The truth is, Paris isn’t that big of a city. You can cross arrondissements on foot in a matter of minutes. You can even walk across the city in just a few hours.

As with many other cities around the world, the closer you are to the Paris city center the more expensive accommodations get. even the properties listed on AirBnB can be pricey, depending on the location.

In Paris, there’s a high concentration of budget hotels and hostels in the areas near Montmartre (18th and 12th arrondissements), place d’Italie (13th Arrondissement), and Voltaire area (11th Arrondissement). I have tried staying in place d’Italie and Voltaire area, and I liked the latter because it is much closer to the city center and has a terrific vibe. For most of our stay in Paris, we stayed at Au Royale Mad, a pretty basic budget hotel in Voltaire but it’s in good location.

HOW TO get TO PARIS

As always, use flight aggregator sites like SkyScanner to check for the lowest fare. should there be any connecting flights, make sure that the incoming and outgoing flights are using the same airport.

If you’re coming from the Manila, I have found that EVA Air, China Eastern, and China southern offer the cheapest year-round fares with only one stop. just a bit above P30,000 only. Others offer less but take too many plane changes. You can also find cheaper fares during SEAT SALES.

When I was planning my trip, I saw fares for P29,000, but it was gone by the time I was issued a visa. Haha. but it proves that finding fares for less than P30,000 is completely possible. You just need to be patient and book in advance.

CHARLES DE GAULLE airport TO PARIS CITY CENTER

Know that Paris is served by 3 airports: Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Orly (ORY), and Beauvais (BVA). but you’re most likely to be flying in via CDG.

CDG has three terminals, with terminal 3 situated between 1 and 2. (Confusing, I know.) terminal 2 is divided further into 7 sub-terminals: 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, 2E, 2F, and 2G. only Terminals 2 and 3 have train stations.

The cheapest and fastest way to get to the city center from the airport is the RER B (blue) train line that makes a stop at both terminal 2 (between 2F and 2E) and terminal 3. After going through the immigration counters, baggage carousel, and customs, just follow the signs that lead to TRAINS TO THE CITY. also look for the RER sign.

If your flight is landing at terminal 1, here’s how to do it:

Take the free CDGVAL airport shuttle train to terminal 3. After going through Immigration, look for the CDGVAL signs, which are all around terminal 1. Board the shuttle to terminal 3.

You can buy one-way ticket to the city center for EUR 10. The machine accepts only Euro coins or chip-enabled credit cards.

You can buy a ticket here. OR, you can buy a NAVIGO PASS, which I will explain below.

NAVIGO WEEK PASS and how to get One

If you’re arriving in Paris on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday by plane, it would be good to purchase a NAVIGO Découverte, a card that will allow you unlimited rides to the metro, RER trains, trams, and buses for a week. It’s a good buy because, as I said earlier, the fare from the airport to the city center alone is EUR 10. round trip is EU 20. but a NAVIGO Découverte costs only EU 22.15 plus another EUR 5 for the actual card. total of EUR 27.15. It already covers all 5 tourism zones of Paris.

Another case that proves Navigo Découverte as a wise choice is when you’re traveling to Versailles. The trip to Versailles alone costs EUR 7.10. but Versailles is in zone 4, and is covered by Navigo. You won’t have to purchase another ticket to get there. same applies to Disneyland Paris, which is in zone 5.

But there’s a catch. Timing is everything when it comes to Navigo. Each card is valid only from Monday 00:00 (12 mn) to Sunday 23:59 (11:59 pm). So for example, you purchase it on a Wednesday, that gives you only 4 days to use the card. You will have to reload it on Monday if you still want to continue using it.

That’s the reason why they stop selling Navigo Découverte passes for the week on Thursday 23:59. If you buy on a Friday, that pass will be valid for the coming Monday, not that same week.

To purchase a Navigo Découverte card, here’s what you need to do:

Approach a ticket window at any Metro or RER train station.

Tell the staff that you’re buying a NAVIGO Découverte card for ALL 5 ZONES. They will ask you for a photo (300mm x 250mm). sometimes they accept passport-size photo. If you don’t have a photo, there are Photomaton booths at almost every station in Paris.

The staff will then assemble the card for you and explain how it works.

Pay for it. EUR 5 for the card, and EUR 22.15 for the load.

Det er det. You can use it right away. just hover the card above the scanner when entering any station.

A NAVIGO Monthly Pass is also available for EUR 73.

HOW TO get around PARIS

The best way to see Paris: ON FOOT. Paris is a very walkable city because it isn’t that big and there’s a lot of interesting things to see. Roadside cafes lace almost every corner, historic monuments adorn its roundabouts, and the smell of freshly baked bread coming from local boulangeries fill the air. walking is really the way to go.

The Louvre
Many tourist attractions can be visited in a day just by walking. For example, the Arc de Triomphe, Champs Elysees, place de la Concorde, Jardin de Tuileries, and the Louvre are situated next to each other. You can spend one full day checking all these out. (Actually, you can spend one full day inside the Louvre and it still won’t be enough.)

However, if you’re too exhausted to walk, the best alternative is the subway or the METRO. One thing I totally love about Paris is its expansive 300-station train system that connects much of the city. It’s low-cost and efficient, and it’s seldom crowded because there’s always a train every five minutes or so.

THINGS TO do in PARIS

Too many to mention. Haha. Kidding.

But seriously, there’s so much to experience in the City of Light. but below are some things that I think one shouldn’t miss when they’re in Paris, grouped according to proximity to one another so you can easily see them on foot.

However, if for whatever reason, you’re not interested in walking, you have other options below.

Eiffeltårnet

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Eiffel Tower is incredibly popular. If you wish to access and climb the tower, you will have to make a reservation in advance. The queue here can get crazy long, but it can be skipped if you book it early. There are two types of tickets: one for just the first 2 floors; and the other for all 3 levels. Of course, the latter is more expensive.

HOW TO travel KAZAKHSTAN BY TRAIN

HOW TO travel KAZAKHSTAN BY TRAIN

Last updated 2/2/2020 | February 2nd, 2020

Kazakhstan is a country I’ve always wished to visit. In fact, I’ve always wished to go to all the “Stans”. It’s the region of the world I most likely want to see the most. After having resided in Kazakhstan for 8 years, Doug fears understands a thing or two about the country as well as exactly how to navigate it. In this guest post, Doug offers some in-depth advice about exactly how to travel around Kazakhstan by train!

Night spilled across the Kazakh steppe. The train’s steel wheels clickety-clacked below, carefully prompting me to point toward a bowl of plastic-wrapped apples. Suddenly, my drunken dining cars and truck buddy began gesticulating wildly while repeating his favorite, as well as perhaps only, English-language phrase, “No problem!” With a shake of the head as well as wave of the hand, this newfound good friend seemed to reject all other apples as second-rate. Apples originated from Kazakhstan, after all, as well as we had just departed the city of Almaty, “the father of apples.” I just had to try one. (Den var lækker.)

Taking the train with Kazakhstan, the world’s ninth largest country, provides a altering cultural tapestry every time. envision a vast land, when secretive as well as closed to outsiders, where travelers can now experience an eclectic blend of Silk road culture, offbeat Soviet-era history, as well as wide-open areas spiced with warm Kazakh hospitality.

I’ve shared cabins with young soldiers, border police, language professors as well as martial artists, just to name a few. My preferred memories are the meals as well as card games enjoyed with these folks, even when I didn’t have a typical language.

So fail to remember whatever about the movie Borat, as well as climb aboard as you search ancient bazaars, trip the rails, as well as trip to pristine mountain lakes.

Planning Your Route

I suggest the complying with itinerary: flying into the capital, Nur-Sultan (formerly Astana) (airport code TSE), heading north to close-by Lake Burabay, taking a quick train back south to Karaganda, then an overnight traditional train to Almaty in the southeast, with a possible extension to Turkistan (a city as well as region in the south of the country).

If you want to continue on in central Asia, you can quickly prolong your trip from Almaty to see the gorgeous mountain vistas of close-by Kyrgyzstan or continue by train from Turkistan south to Uzbekistan.

The finest time to go is between may as well as October, as northern Kazakhstan is blanketed in snow from November with April, with typical temps in the minus-20 range. Those wanting to snow ski or experience the enjoyment of new Year’s, the country’s biggest holiday, however, should think about a winter season trip.

Visas are no longer needed for most visitors to Kazakhstan (for 30 days) as well as Kyrgyzstan (for 60 days), though advance visas are needed for Uzbekistan, Russia, as well as China.

Buying Train Tickets

There are three kinds of trains: the quick business-class Talgo, routine long-distance trains, as well as regional electrics. budget plan travelers should opt for routine trains for most trips. regional electrics are generally sluggish as well as will be of restricted use.

On routine trains — extremely suggested for the very best cultural experience — the two primary classes are kupe (a four-person closed compartment with two upper as well as lower bunks) as well as platzkar (an open rolling dormitory holding 54 travelers on two-level bunks). The kupe is quieter as well as more private, however single women may want to select the somewhat safer open platzkar, as they might be in a locked cabin with three guy (no gender distinctions are made when making reservations). likewise recognize that not all trains run daily.

The new Kazakhstan e-ticket website is not simple to use: while there is an English menu, it needs you to go into destination cities utilizing a Russian keyboard! Some foreign bankcards won’t work for payment, as well as even successful ticket purchases are commonly blocked by spam filters. However, there is an choice to chat on the internet with an English-language consultant who can assist you discover as well as purchase tickets.

My tip is to utilize this site as a recommendation to discover train timetables as well as to purchase long-distance train tickets that are more likely to be offered out. You can utilize the practical site genuine Russia for worldwide train ticket purchases (especially for traveling from Moscow to central Asia).

Then go to a train station or train ticket office in the city, as some have kiosk machines that you can try. one more choice is to compose your destination as well as date on a piece of paper as well as present it to a ticket agent at a station or train office for help.

Once you have your ticket, the most important things to understand are the date as well as time of departure, as well as wagon number. inspect the published indications in the station to discover which platform number your train is on as well as walk toward that wagon — the conductor will inspect your ID as well as ticket as well as assist you board.

Kazakhstan Costs

Traveling by train is much safer as well as enjoyable than by bus, as well as an incredible value for the long distances traveled. A common overnight train ticket from Karaganda to Almaty will be about $9 USD for platzkar as well as $14 for kupe. By comparison, the business-class Talgo on the exact same path costs $25 in a four-berth kupe, however it does reduce travel time by six hours (and has much cleaner bathrooms!). A night train provides double value, serving as both bed as well as transport; they are cooler as well as more comfortable in the summertime travel season too!

Local city buses are cheap, about $0.20 per ride, regardless of distance.

Hotel spaces in the city centers of Nur-Sultan as well as Almaty variety from $30 to $50 per night with breakfast. full apartments ($25/night) or shared guest spaces ($10/night) can be booked on Airbnb.

Food is likewise fairly priced. I suggest discovering a hotel with breakfast included on booking.com, eating picnic-style meals on the train, as well as enjoying a streetside café for other meals (grilled shashlik skewers, bread, salad, as well as drink for about $4), though if you can’t peel it or cook it, it’s finest to fail to remember it. as well as make sure to try the regional apples!

Essential Kazakhstan travel Hacks

Do reserve an upper bunk if you like relaxing onboard (lower bunks are shared during the daytime as well as utilized for communal meals), however you requirement to be fairly in shape to climb the mini-ladder.

Do bring a comfortable modification of clothes to wear onboard (track suit, shorts, as well as T-shirt). It’s completely typical to ask others to step outside while you change.

Do bring additional food to share (tea/coffee, immediate noodles, sausage, cucumbers, bread, biscuits, apples, sweets). Note: there is always a steaming samovar of hot water in each cars and truck for making tea or noodles.

Do pack a little train set (mug, fork/spoon/knife, toilet paper, plate, wet wipes, plastic sandals, collapsible hand fan, deck of cards, bottled water).

Do take your street shoes off when entering a train compartment.

Do plan your bathroom visits, as the toilets are locked about 15 minutes before as well as after station stops (read the timetable published in each wagon).

Do take some little gifts from your house country (magnets, key rings) to share.

Don’t buy unsold seats from touts lurking around stations — I’ve been stuck sharing a four-berth kupe with six people plus a giant-screen TV!

Don’t get scolded for lying on a bare mattress, however don’t pay additional for sheets as well as towels in kupe class. They are now included in the kupe ticket fare, however be careful you may be awakened extremely early by the conductor collecting them on overnight trains!

Don’t be bullied by deliver authorities or immigration officials at borders — show your passport as well as ticket as well as nothing more.

Don’t miss your stop, get stranded on the platform buying ice cream, or, above all, be required to jump off a moving train!

Best Kazakhstan Train Routes

Because of the difficulties with the ticketing website, I’ve listed the most practical train routes for getting around. note that all of these run daily.

While northbound trains from Nur-Sultan stop at Borovoye/Shchuchinsk, it may be easier to take a shared van or minibus for the short 2.5-hour trip. just listen or request “Borovoye” at the Nur-Sultan-1 train station, where vans wait to fill up as well as leave throughout the day. You can do the exact same if heading directly south from Nur-Sultan to Karaganda, as a new tollway has opened, cutting the travel time between these two major cities to two hours, although all Nur-Sultan-to-Almaty trains likewise stop there. note that both Nur-Sultan as well as Almaty have two train stations in different parts of the city — make sure you go to the right one!

Train #031 from Almaty to Semey in the northeast traces the historical “TurkSib” path — from right here you can head east to check out the Altay Mountains or continue north into Russia to link with the legendary Trans-Siberian route.

***

Sikkerhedsvinge (for alle nedenfor 70)

Forsikre min rejse (for dem over 70)

Medjet (for ekstra repatrieringsdækning)
